‘They are not going to be OK:’ Professor on student mental health after shootings

When there was a mass shooting at Morgan State University in Maryland in October, prompting students to shelter in place, there was some talk that students were “post-Columbine kids,” used to doing mass shooting drills, professor Jason Johnson said today.

But “they’re not OK, they’re not going to be OK,” Johnson, professor at Morgan State’s School of Global Journalism and Communication, said on MSNBC after the shooting at UNLV.

“The impact of this kind of violence is so extreme on the faculty, on the staff, on the feelings of everybody, and it lingers,” Johnson said.

“These kids have lost their safety,” he said. “There’s a college freshman there who has left their home for the first time, who’s never going to feel safe on that campus again.”

English professor describes hearing at least seven loud gunshots

Vincent Perez, an English professor at UNLV who has been sheltering in place since gunfire rang out on campus, described hearing seven or eight loud shots, "one after another," when he went out to the balcony of a building.

"We heard that [and] we ran back inside," Perez told MSNBC's Katy Tur. "We realize this is a real shooting, and there’s an active shooter on campus."

"It just sounded like a high-powered weapon — just echoing, echoing in a way that ... makes you realize this is somebody out to kill people," Perez added.

Another school shooting....in Iowa this time....

No details released as of yet. I'm hoping it was just a case of someone bringing a gun to school and being caught before anyone got hurt....

I'll start this post off by saying I'm not happy or sad about this verdict. The entire thing is just sad all around.

What I will say is that no matter what side of the gun debate you fall on, (and I think everyone here knows what side I'm on) this decision could have far reaching ramifications. This is a case of a jury finding someone else culpable for a mass shooting, rather than just the shooter:

A jury has found a Michigan mother guilty of involuntary manslaughter for failing to stop her son from carrying out a deadly school shooting.

Jennifer Crumbley, 45, is the first US parent convicted of manslaughter over a mass shooting carried out by their child.

Prosecutors accused her of being negligent in allowing her son to have a gun, and ignoring warnings signs.

Her husband, James, is facing a separate trial on the same charges.

TBH, I'll be surprised if the NRA, or some other right wing group doesn't fund an appeal, but for now at least, it seems like the actions (or inactions) of the parents of teenage mass shooters are going to have consequences.

Yet, Taylor Swift has given the family $100,000K. Money won't bring Mom back, but at least someone is thinking and doing something positive for her family. What a f'd up Country to the South of us.

Bear in mind: The NRA and the Republican politicians and judges that they control, want to make sure that laws like this one in Michigan do not exist:

A Michigan man whose 2-year-old daughter shot herself in the head with his revolver last week pleaded not guilty after becoming the first person charged under the state’s new law requiring safe storage of guns.

Michael Tolbert, 44, of Flint, was arraigned Monday on nine felony charges including single counts of first-degree child abuse and violation of Michigan's gun storage law, said John Potbury, Genesee County's deputy chief assistant prosecuting attorney.

This idiot left a loaded weapon where a 2 year-old could get ahold of it, FFS. :picard:

What also needs to change is federal sentencing guidelines for gun possession by a felon.

Currently you are looking at 2-10 years in prison at the federal level and sentencing length varies by the state.

They should make it a federal crime and bump it to 15-20 years without parole, repeat offenders like this guy should get automatic life without possibility of parole.

The National Rifle Association and its former longtime leader were found liable Friday in a lawsuit centered on the organization’s lavish spending.

The New York jury found that Wayne LaPierre, who was the NRA’s CEO for three decades, misspent millions of dollars of the group’s money on pricey perks for themselves.

Jurors ordered LaPierre to pay $4,351,231 in restitution. NRA general counsel John Frazer and retired finance chief Wilson Phillips were also defendants in the case.

Thoughts and prayers, asshole....
