[Speculation] Carolina Hurricanes Pursuing Nikolaj Ehlers

Carolina Hurricanes Pursuing Nikolaj Ehlers

July 6th, 2024 at 6:59pm CST • By Brennan McClain

One of the storylines heading into the 2024 offseason was the number of players on the trading block. Although a few players have already been moved to new clubs, Nikolaj Ehlers of the Winnipeg Jets has still not found a new home. Hoping to change that, Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News reported yesterday that the Carolina Hurricanes are pushing heavily for Ehlers’ services.

Carolina’s interest comes as no surprise with the team losing Jake Guentzel, Teuvo Teravainen, and Stefan Noesen on the free-agent market in only a week. Acquiring a player of Ehlers caliber could help soften the blow for the Hurricanes as they look to continue their dominance in the NHL’s Metropolitan Division during the regular season. Carolina would also present a natural trade partner for Winnipeg as they have a change-of-scenery candidate, as well.

The likelihood of Carolina moving on from forward Martin Necas has certainly dissipated over the last several days as the Hurricanes may be better served by signing the restricted free agent to contract with the amount of depth they lost up front. However, if Carolina is still looking to trade Necas, a one-for-one swap with the Jets might make the most sense. Assuming that both players are willing to discuss an extension as a part of the deal — a trade involving Ehlers for Necas might be the easiest path forward for both sides.

Ehlers style of play would fit seamlessly in Carolina as he has one of the better possession games in the league. Throughout his tenure in Winnipeg dating back to the 2015-16 NHL season, Ehlers has scored 201 goals and 457 points in 605 games while averaging a CorsiFor% of 57.6% over that stretch. The biggest criticism of Ehlers’ game, and simultaneously for the Hurricanes, is his lack of performance during the postseason as he’s only scored four goals and 14 points in 37 playoff contests.

I don’t know how you go from targeting the 4th overall pick to trying to get a 28 year old winger that’s probably gonna want more than Necas…

My money is on a meddling owner and a crappy gm.

Maybe.

Makes no sense though. It’s a lateral move at best. Definitely doesn’t make up for losing Guentzel. 🤣

What retards.. Losing 2 of their top 6 forwards for nothing. Losing 2 of their top 4 defense for nothing. Now they are randomly trying to add Ehlers. Not to mention randomly signing Orslov and Kuznetsov which actually led to them losing so many valuable pieces this offseason.

I thought may be a Marner deal is in the works for them. But now it looks more like they are just retards.

Everybody knows comedians have only reclaimed the verb “retarded” and not yet the noun or adjective. Cool it.

Has to be one of the weirdest resumes in hockey. It would be like a surgeon running the biggest architectural companies in the world.

Canes are having a terrible off season. They will miss the playoffs this coming season. Brindamour will be fired. Their rink will soon be empty. Their owner will whine like McBaby. The team moves to Quebec.

well, his background isn’t was hurting that team. It shows he is intelligent.

It’s a lack of communication if he is the problem because the knowledge is there with every expert they have in management.

Do you think the other people around him deliberately forced him to make mistakes?

This seems like a weird one that was pulled out do someone’s rear end who needed a story during a slow time.

It doesn’t make them better and there isn’t a lot of chance that Necas agreed to extend in Winnipeg.

this is what happens when you give an internet analytics nerd the keys to the kingdom.

The Hurricanes owner makes no sense!

I'd imagine it would be very frustrating to be a fan of that team..

Canucks owner might be a douchebag but at least he lets the Management staff actually manage the team day to day!

They were definitely asking too much for Necas, got burned, and are now scrambling to correct. Kind of feels like Benning's "ran out of time" summer for them.

Time for Canucks to circle back then.

being intelligent doesn’t mean you are qualified. He has 0 background and experience in hockey or a front office role. If they wanted him to be the gm they should at least start him years ago as assistant gm so he have experience and learn some of the day to day.. at least dubas started as an agent and gm of some chl club before jumping into the leafs gm role.

So you say that he as a GM should be hands on every contract?
I thought every team had specialists doing that.

Intelligence does a lot and he should be very good with words since he became a GM without experience.

So in my view it seems he has staff that works against him.

Can you explain how hIs inexperience was bad for the team?

Not sure why folks think it absurd they CAR might be pursuing Ehlers. What do folks expect them to do…sit idle?

That club last season had major playoff aspirations and were considered a strong candidate by all pundits. This offseason they have been severely impacted by Free Agency losses and their overall club strength depleted, especially on D. Can’t just fault mgmt on that, every team has a little more money in their pocket to play with and every free agent sees that as an opportunity to cash in. We just experienced the same.

CAR just extended Brind’Amour to a multi year deal…why wouldn’t they be in trade talks with any teams regarding any viable players who could potentially help reshape their outlook? Yeah ideally they keep Necas but he’s a malcontent. Ehlers is as well. Makes sense they’d consider swapping, no?

I don’t understand the hate, but then again, not too bullish on Tulsky to begin with.

The Bremerhaven Penguins 8th leading scorer last season?

They would have to add!

Outscored by Alex Friesen 🤣

(Also outscored quite handily by Linden Vey and fellow failed prospect Michael Dal Colle)
