Coconuts Posted July 8 Share Posted July 8 Throughout my time on CDC, and now CFF, I've run into several very knowledgeable hockey posters, but from the heights of capgeek onward the game has gradually changed a bit. Hockey knowledge can relate to the history of the game, personal anecdotes, and so on, but a lot of hockey knowledge is drawn from accessing hockey resources; sometimes hockey knowledge involves knowing which resources to access, knowing how to read graphs, charts and so on, and being willing to simply put the reading time and effort in. Sometimes it's following certain insides, youtubers, podcasts, and so on. This is even true amongst hockey professionals, the widespread use of capfriendly amongst league front offices speaks to that. Another example of this is Luongo's looking at elite prospects during the past draft. On forums such as this one, HF, reddit, and so on, being able to back up what you're arguing is something that folks regularly find themselves doing, or trying to do. It's the largest hockey forum bit I know of, and features fans of every fanbase. As such, I find it's also one of the best resources for keeping up with hockey related news. Hockey-reference blocks their season searches behind paywalls now though and NHL.com vastly improved theirs a few years back, so I used NHL.com a lot as well. HockeyDB is my go-to for players with extensive relevant time outside of the NHL, such as AHL/NHL tweeners or prospects. For advanced stats, I use Moneypuck and Natural Stattrick. Sometimes if I want to check if my opinion on a player of another team checks out, I'll go to that team's subreddit and make a post to see what they think. The idea behind this thread is to share resources for those of who us who use them, but largely for those of us who don't on the off chance they might be interested. Thanks for the heads up on that one. I also used the hockey news for years. But I let my subscription run out. I have just dipped into fantasy hockey and have used : fantasydata.com for player stats and they show yahoo, draftkings and fanduel stats which may be useful to some in the fantasy hockey world. Taking the aggregate of fluff, doesn't work for me anyways. Button was a respected scout, but he's not a scout anymore, even his lists are above average, if a GM just used it and ignored the fluff. That draft was a warning sign not to buy into the WJ's hype too much. Mckeens makes a good fantasy pool mag, but did/do they have the same pull as ISS. Or Central Scouting? TSN and THN get some authority for sure, as far as media sources - they "nailed it" with OJ at six. Spent a lot of time during those drafts learning about different players. OJ was far off the radar at 5. Both in the CDC chat sites, and in the draft realm, was Sergachev, Chychrun or OJ the first D off the board, and where were they going to start coming off the board was a debate. 8-11. Chychrun got the highest ranking at 4 of any of the 15 .and NA Scouting had OJ at 10, Chychrun 9. 7 of the 15 had OJ in the 9-11 range after the WJs's. The rest higher. It for sure was debateable. A 40 point LHD on a loaded London team. With one great WJ's...his floor was considered high, the ceiling not so much. Chycrhun a year before, was up there with Austin Mathew's. Injuries derailed things. And OJ started out as a late first early second on a lot of lists before his draft season. PLD appeared to be our pick pre-draft. At least that was what JB kept inferring. So believe he was their first choice. MT on the other hand, was a top five choice, moved up to a top 2-4. There were tiers in that draft. He was top tier. After him and the two other FIN's, PLD started the next tier. Then the D-men. There's a reason why the entire building was in an uproar drafting OJ. That pick was simply awful at the time given what had dropped on our lap. It was a gift. Get the organizational pick, but OJ definitely had completion with Chycrhun, and Sergachev. At the time I didn't even have him on my list .. We could have easily sold our pick, and drafted one of those 3 guys. OJ wasn't heads and tails ahead of Chycrun for sure. And Sergachev had the highest ceiling. Not sure why THN bumped him up so much, maybe because TSN had their list, their print media mag, the one you see on draft tables, had OJ at 9. Curious how many of us fans, hockey enthusiasts, had OJ as our pick. The building sure didn't like it, at all. Disappointing pick from the very start. Only time i've been upset watching the draft, and rightly so. We turned down one of the best wingers of his generation, and didn't even get a 7-8th D from it. One of the worst picks in franchise history. JB should have at least traded down and added something else considering there were 3 D's available, none really clearly above the other (edge to OJ but not by much) . Plus Sergachev had some size, was RHD, hits, blocks, takes a ton of shots and helped fill the net. McAvoy was for sure in the weeds, the other two were not. If he traded down it at least would have been palatable. Also think PLD was his first choice. Not sure what he had against MT, given he's a forward too. Guess it was organizational pick.
