EDMONTON -- Training never stops.

 

At least it hasn't stopped for New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe. The 6-foot-7 241 lbs rookie began his NHL career in the 2023-24 season. He scored his first goal, while also earned a scrappy reputation.

 

In 17 games he participated in five fights. While in the AHL he threw his knuckles around too. Seven fights and eight goals in 43 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack.

 

It appears that Rempe is preparing himself for more fights in the 2024-25 season. Yesterday, Edmonton Oilers alumni Georges Laraque shared a post on Twitter regarding Rempe.

 

In his tweet he said, "I'm training Matt Rempe and Tyrel Bauer for hockey fighting, this week in Edmonton, at the Silent Ice arena. If you thought Rempe was a problem this year in the NHL, wait till you see him this coming season."

 

Rempe earned a reputation for being a tough customer. Him going into his second season with most people already knowing his scrappy nature puts a target on his back. Everyone in the league knows who he is and what he brings.

 

It's wise of Rempe to be prepared for what could be coming his way. He's a big body who isn't afraid to throw his weight around. Let's hope that he can carve a role as a good secondary scorer and not just a brute.

He’s not wearing any equipment. The shin pads would go all the way down and over the skate tongue to tighten everything up. Notice how Rempe has his shin pads all the way down and overtop the skate tongue?

When I saw the title of the thread, I had just assumed the training was for fighting. Georges Laraque(bless his heart) won’t be teaching skating, shooting or dangling lessons.

This just got me thinking, back in the day fighting was boxing, With mma and spinning kicks to the head, spinning back kick or side kick etc, what if a younger player trained in this and his instincts were to go to this with no rules as of yet?   A punch to the head is aim to injure, Maybe there is a actual rule in place for a kick to the body? Doubtful it will ever be tried but still no rule for life ban?

I don't think there's a specific rule, but if someone deliberately puts their skate into another player you can guarantee they're getting suspended.

BOSTON — Former Nashville Predators captain Greg Johnson has been posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy following a post-mortem brain tissue analysis.

The diagnosis was released Wednesday by Johnson's widow Kristin and daughters Carson and Piper through the Concussion Legacy Foundation.

Johnson, from Thunder Bay, Ont., died by suicide five years ago at age 48 after a 14-season NHL career.

He was the second-ever team captain for the Predators, where he played from 1998-2006. He also played for Detroit, Chicago and Pittsburgh.

Kristin Johnson said in a statement the CTE diagnosis "took her breath away" and that Greg Johnson experienced very few symptoms, but spoke of his concussions often.

CTE is a degenerative disease affecting people who have suffered repeated concussions or traumatic brain injuries.

It's one of the biggest stories of the season that the NHL and media, hockey writers, won't be done with for awhile. 

 

Rempe joined the big club, fought his first game (shift?) and the NYRs went on a shocking 14-2-1 run ... 5 fights, all against the remaining big guys in the league, at 21.    Playing 5 minutes a game , and laying out some ridiculously heavy hits.    

 

2011 impacted the sport in a huge way.   Losing 3 enforcers, two from suicide and one from overdose, put a lens on one of its dirty little secrets.    That these guys weren't getting the proper care, under immense pressure's, and for these guys who dedicated their lives to protect their teammates, weren't getting taken care of themselves.   This is a year after Probert, who was healthy living at the time, died of a heart attack.   Todd Ewen, one of the most aggressive enforcer's of the early mid 90's, who fought anyone (including Probert who he and only a few others have the distinction of dropping with a punch), is also on the list.   And recently another one, an early (first?)  captain of the NSH predators, who wasn't an enforcer per say but fought all the same, was lost to suicide at 45, and of course Chris Simon.  

 

Bodies have piled up, and that's a lot of grief and broken families, for our viewing pleasure.   As a stakeholder, and someone who  believes the golden era of the NHL has come and gone ..  this is one part I do wish, never happened.    How did it happen?  If you ask the players and many in the sport, it all started when the instigator penalty was added.    It forced teams to settle things differently.    Guys from the 70''-80's a few like Gillies didn't live as long as you'd like to see, but their bodies didn't pile up, and wowzers some Slap Shot stuff there.    By adding that penalty, things that normally would be dealt with right then and there, rarely did.    Often these guys would take the instigator anyways, but eventually that was coached out.   And the result ... by the mid 90's goons started to show up.    There is a difference.   Guys that really wouldn't be anywhere close to the NHL if they were big and willing to fight for "team honour" at center ice, often against guys that actually could play the game and be a regular 3-4th line contributor.   Like Probert.   Like Domi.    Brashear.     Simon.      Parker?  Ciccone?  Worrel?  Nope.   Goons.   And that hurt the soul of the league.    They kept it up through the 2000's despite mounting evidence that fighting no longer had integrity, and was well entertainment (?$), and who wouldn't want a shot as a young lad if you had the physical gifts and willing to do it.    Was a black eye on the league and especially, and shame on us for enjoying it.   They should have at least, maybe put a cap on how many fights a player is allowed to happen, as a simple safety rule.   

Original six,  back then every player was responsible for themselves.   There were no big brothers or big buddies around to fight your own fights.    Ferguson, who is widely considered, the original enforcer, used to lead the league with 9-14 or so fights per season.   The guys below him, 5 maybe 6.   That's it.     Nobody was fighting 20 times plus a season.    Broadstreet changed that, and like every cup winning team, the rest try and emulate ... so now every team needs one or two and the arms race started. 

 

Enforcers haven't really been a part of the game now for a decade, the "death of the enforcer" was well documented for those who are curious about it.   One thing that always stuck out for me though is, would they make a comeback?   There is plenty of evidence available, that show there is a place for them (not goons).   Because all it takes is one, and the arms races is right back to it.   Rempe ... he's already a favourite and $$$$ started to pour into owners wallets, for teams who have a Matt Martin, Ryan Reaves, Deslauriers, Olivier (think I got them all ... for now).   THN in their playoff mag did their annual top ten biggest moments of 2024,  Rempe clocked in at 8.   Over a lot of other moments.

 

It's fair to say he's given the Rangers fans something to enjoy.   And was a storyline in the post season as well.   Kids only 21.   Who's protecting him?    Laraque.   I'm glad he's getting some lessons on how to keep himself safe.    These guys don't really want to hurt their opponent.      What will a 40 year old Rempe, say to his 21 year old counter part when it's all said and done?   Will it be worth it.     Most enforcers, will say no regrets.    Think that, these guys should be at least evaluated on a regular basis, mental health wise.    Rempe for the moment, doesn't have to worry about when he's got to fight Tony Twist, Bob Probert, Dave Brown, George Laraque, Joey Kocur etc next yet.  

 

Leagues always got room for guys who can play and fight.    Doesn't have room for the dancing bear show.

Odd take.   He's just getting started, like anything practice makes perfect.    And I don't see anyone on our team dropping them with guys like Reaves, Matt Martin, Deslaurier's, Olivier ..  He's fighting veteran guys that barely even exist anymore.    Was pretty sure, given kids have stopped fighting at 14-16 to learn how to do it in junior,  that we'd never see anyone again.    Nobody wants to see this kid hurt.   It is his choice though, and can't take that away either.    Do think that if these guys make a comeback,  which with the buzz it's getting it's  possible, especially if the NYR have success, and the $$$ that put butts in seats (and it does), that other big kids who can't make the NHL, will decide that this is their best shot.  

 

Shero, looking through the weeds all over Saskatewan to find the farm tough kids that they can work with...i'm sure they exist somewhere.    I'd put good money on this to have a ripple effect on the division if he sticks around.   It already has.
