ANNOUNCEMENT

The following important dates have been finalized for the upcoming off-season:

June TBD, 2024 - Start of 2 week buyout period (Day after Cup Finals ends)

Friday June 28, 2024 - Last day to trade pending UFA rights

Friday June 28, 2024 - Last day to begin negotiations with pending UFAs

Friday June 28, 2024  - Last day to qualify RFAs

Monday July 1, 2024 - First day to send in free agent offers

Saturday July 6, 2024 - First day of free agent negotiations, maybe signings

July TBD, 2024 - End of 2 week buyout period

Hopefully these dates give both GMs and myself sufficient time to wrap-up the re-signing phase and transition to the free agency phase.

A reminder that there is no advantage gained or penalty for sending in free agent offers on July 1st or July 5th, all offers will be weighted equally beginning on July 6th. This allows for GMs to see what develops in the first few days of NHL Free Agency.

We have a trade to announce...

To PIT - Erik Karlsson, SJS 2026 1st Round Pick, SJS 2026 3rd Round Pick
To SJS - Brent Burns (50% retained for 2024-25 season), Sam Steel, PIT 2025 5th Round Pick

Bit of a relief to get this one done. Thanks to @Ilunga for smooth negotiations. We'd discussed similar types of deals with a couple teams; had one deal in place with a team for half a year waiting for them to show up on Karlsson's 15 team list, but to no avail. My management group had talked about wanting to add an impact Cane for a while now, and we think Burns has one more good year in him. Was a bitter playoff exit, but we went immediately to work and after this and another trade in the queue, we feel like we're locked and loaded for an even stronger playoff run next year.

Big thanks to both @awalk and @ActionJax09 for very smooth negotiations.

For better or worse, this was one of my favorite trades of late. It started with two GMs with players that have been on the block for a while, and after one GM telling me Crosby just isn't a valuable trade chip right now.

But then once we found the framework, there were so many moving pieces and difficulties to juggle, from finding a team willing to retain, to deciding who should pay the assets for retention, then one GM agreeing to retention due to a miscommunication and backing out, to the uncertainty whether Crosby would even waive his NMC.

Ultimately this is a great testament to just finding a deal that's a good fit for both teams. Colorado has some playoff gamebreakers but wanted regular season help. San Jose has been a regular season force but looking for the missing pieces to put us over in playoffs.

Roster move: recall William Eklund

Sharks' projected 2024/'25 lineup:

Artturi Lehkonen - Anze Kopitar - Mark Stone

William Eklund - Anthony Cirelli - Matt Duchene

Trent Frederic - Ross Colton - Michael Amadio

Warren Foegele - Sam Steel - Kiefer Sherwood

Paul Cotter, Jimmy Vesey

Victor Hedman - Brent Burns

Devon Toews - ????

Esa Lindell - Darren Raddysh

????

Sergei Bobrovsky

Logan Thompson

So we'll just be looking to add a couple of defensemen at free agency. Or alternatively if we land on a free agent forward we like we could look to trade Colton for help on defense.

Pretty excited about our "haul" of new prospects. We had every intention of taking an over-ager with our lone pick at 79. Never expected to take a goalie. But when the pick rolled around Yegorov was top of the list. Had him as the top goalie in the draft. We figured we might be getting a little late in the contention window to be adding prospects that will make playoff lineups for us now, even over-agers, so we thought we'd get a head start on the retool/rebuild phase and get some high-end goalies into the system to incubate.

After watching @D-Money (and a couple others) draft all our over-age targets, we were able to add another pick to get a guy we had as our number two ranked over-age goalie (@Nail took our number one).

Congrats to Yaroslav Askarov on his AHL Top Prospect team honours!

Yaroslav Askarov was my first pick with the devils. Glad to see him having success in the AHL! Hopefully soon in the NHL.
