Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Looking at Sunday's schedule:

A lot of cycling and wrestling competitions and a few other things.  They're all early morning events with the last event of the Olympics being the France/US Women's Basketball game at 6:30am.

So Sunday is really just a day to wait for the closing ceremonies that start at noon PT.   They're expected to last for about 2 to 2 1/2 hours.

The Canadian flag-bearer will be announced in the morning.

Why do they keep mentioning "non-boycotted" olympics?

Moscow 1980 was boycotted by the Americans (among other countries, including Canada) because of Russia's invasion of Afghanistan....

Russia and their allies boycotted LA in 1984, in retaliation.

And the countries that were there won a boatload of medals, so those medal records aren't normally counted

But we got more medals at Pyeongchang, didn't we?  And I don't recall those being boycotted.  Russia was banned for reasons of prior doping infractions, but that's not a boycott.

edit, or are the winter games just considered a bastard games and only the summer ones count?  :classic_ninja:

The headline says "Summer Games". Pyechongchang is still the most successful Olympic games....

1984 Russia and other Eastern Bloc countries boycotted the Los Angelas Olympics, as retaliation for the 1980 boycott of the Moscow Olympics.

Either way, Canada has come a long way from Montreal '76, when we had the dubious "honor" of being the only host country not to win a gold medal....

Probably because they sunk all the money into that horrible Olympic Stadium, and that was prior to sponsorships for the Olympics being allowed.

The reason we had the Super Lotto was to help pay for the games. The 1976 Olympics lost $1.5 Billion dollars in 1976 money. And wasn't paid off until 2006.

Translate that $1.5 billion translates into $7.5 Billion in today's dollars.

It's amazing what a program like "Own the Podium" can do to drive success in a niche area.

Now if they'd also put that kind of effort into some of the other issues Canada is facing (niche or otherwise), that'd be great.

I mean China can just add the Hong Kong ones to the total and beat the US by 2 gold.

US can do the same with Puerto Rico but don't really help them there with gold.

All things considered, wouldn't a more appropriate metric be the number of medals relative to the countries population?

Best metric is probably a points system. Gold worth 3, Silver worth 2, Bronze worth 1 point or gold worth 5, silver 3, bronze 1 if you want to weigh actually winning more.

I wouldn't normalize relative to country population, degree of sports participation is not constant, would probably normalize it with how many athletes a country send to the Olympics. So conversion rate.
