Oilers hire Stan Bowman as GM and Executive VP

People are trying to say Bowman was a terrible GM, not because of the covering up of the sexual assault, but because he was just terrible period, bad decisions and according to one poster "threw away the core".  How exactly can you "throw away the core", if you won 3 cups?  Can you explain that?  No other team in the salary cap era has won 3 cups.  That's just a dumb comment to be totally honest with you.

My retort was I'd have no problem having a bad GM if he brought us 3 cups.  If Gillis had brought us 3 cups he would be a God in this city and a statue of him would be in front of Rogers Arena.  Regardless that he inherited the core and made so many bad decisions...

You’re ignoring that he inherited Kane, Toews, Hossa, Keith and Seabrook. He did FUCK ALL to help the post cup run team that he inherited. Panarin for Saad deal? LMAO 😂😂😂 mediocre drafting at best… guy is as overrated as Babcock. If his dad wasn’t Scotty he’d still be out of the league.

I wasn't talking about the sexual assault cover up, why are you so confused?  You think I would want the Canucks to hire Stan Bowman today?  My entire point went over a few people's heads it seems.  Weird...

Maybe be clearer.

So anyway, if anyone needs to question our management (Aqua) being a bad owner, we can see now that he isn't quite as bad as many others. Without meaning to sound like a cuck, these are the things that Aqua has been doing over the years, which admittedly has been FAR FROM PERFECT.

1) Continually spending to the cap

2) Continually upgrading facilities (most recently, the state of the art scoreboard)

3) Willing to give management, past and present, the ability to make moves for the most part.

4) Didn't try to arm-bar the city for an arena. 100 percent owned by Aqua.

5) Loves to go on social media to talk about the team

6) Hires competent staff. Aside from the Benning miscue, PA/JR have proven themselves to be very competent, and this is coming from a poster that really didn't like how they started out.

Aqua is a flawed owner, without a doubt; however, he is human and he learns from his mistakes, seemingly. Now if you look at the Oilers/Calgary ownership, they are gouging the cities with their arenas, and now the Oilers are hiring Bowman out of all people.

To be clear, many Oiler fans I have seen online chastise this hiring of the Bowman. This is 100 percent on their shitty management.

That assessment might be true from a hockey operation stand point

But aquillini is an absolute garbage of a human being. Unfortunately I've privileged to nfo I canf share but there's plenty of things in the public too, and comments from multiple ex employees.

I 100% do not support or respect the move to bring Bowman back and I think the NHL missed a huge opportunity here.

But if this scandal wad the worst Bowman did, than it doesn't compare one bit to the things Aquillini has continously done over the years

Let's be clear - Aquilini is a businessman and his business practices have been questionable. No one is giving him a free pass for that. There's also the divorce thing as well, which I won't know much about, but I heard there's a story behind that one too.

I think covering up a sexual scandal is as bad as a shit person can get, with exception to rape itself. Screwing over people through business is not good, yet it's not comparable in scale.

Hilarious that most people are talking about cover up, as well as TERRIBLE performance as a GM. I get that you're glossing over his tenure with the cups, but there's more to the team than the cups. The Hawks fans don't care that Bowman has cups. They STILL think he's a shit GM. In fact, they think that the team received the cups IN SPITE of Bowman.

The shitshow of Benning doesn't have a single cup to speak of and people are still shitting over him. Then compare the reality that Bowman has cups and Hawks fans STILL think he's a shit GM. You gotta put the pieces together. Bowman ain't that good.

Fuck the Coilers. What a terrible decision.

Also this GM is trash. He absolutely inherited the core that won there and did sweet fuck all with his decade in charge.

Imagine if Allvin traded Petey for a bag of pucks and we went on to win 3 cups in 5 years.  I can see the outrage in all Canucks fans...   🤣

Not surprisingly Sportsnet is already starting the spin a day later.

They’ve clearly invested everything in the Leafs and Oilers they won’t dare criticize the moves they make. They could have hired anyone and they would have pumped them up.

Cant wait till Sportsnet is gone and we get more regional based media. The quality of sports coverage in this country has never been lower. Bring on Amazon, Disney, or Apple. As long as we get a better quality of sports coverage I’ll be happy.

This overall is a bit of a weird one. Some of the articles show he actually worked with Beech after to try and improve in this area and did a lot of work around it but at the same time after he knew what happened he set Aldrich up for jobs in college and fucking high school.
Covering up the sexual assault because of the orders of upper management is cowardly and lacks judgement but the kind of judgement that says it is okay to release this guy on children should really keep him out of the league.
Second chances are one thing, rehabilitation is another, but just the inherent lack of awareness to keep pumping a sexual abusers tires and helping his career along after you knew what he did is something altogether different and would be a non-starter for me.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/nhl/oilers-fans-petition-to-fire-stan-bowman-gains-traction/ar-BB1qCicF?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=f28ff6f3e5824566aa7d4cca90f7de3a&ei=40

'An online petition has been gaining momentum surrounding the Edmonton Oilers’ most recent front-office move. The petition was created on July 1, but since the announcement of Stan Bowman being named the new General Manager and Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations for the organization, the number of signatures has skyrocketed.

On Wednesday morning, Oilers fans woke up to the news that the team hired Bowman as their new GM. Bowman last worked in the NHL as the GM for the Chicago Blackhawks, before resigning following the lawsuit claiming the team’s mismanagement of sexual assault allegations. The former player, Kyle Beach, alleged that former Blackhawks’ video coach Brad Aldrich, sexually abused him on various occasions in 2010. Blackhawks team personnel were made aware of these allegations but chose to not address the situation right away, due to the team being in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Chicago would end up winning the Stanley Cup that year, but the team still did not address these serious allegations.

In 2021, a four-month investigation was made into the allegations from 11 years ago. The conclusions were that multiple members of that team insufficiently responded to the manner effectively. As a result, the Blackhawks were fined $2 million and Bowman would end up leaving the organization.

Out of the NHL since 2021, Bowman was reinstated by the league on July 1st for permission to look for NHL opportunities once again.

Oilers Fans Upset and Outraged Following Bowman’s Hiring

At the time of this article, the petition on Change.org has almost 4000 4700 individual signatures. The petition was re-released just hours after the team announced Bowman’s hiring. Over 1200 people signed on Wednesday alone.

Oilers fans have been going to social media to express their displeasure and anger over this controversial decision. While everyone is entitled to second chances, many people believe that what Bowman was involved with in 2010 is inexcusable and simply has no place in hockey today. The Blackhawks’ lack of action combined with the trauma the victims have gone through all these years has fueled the backlash against this move.

It certainly is a head-scratching decision. Before today, the Oilers were having a good offseason with many smart additions. Fans were feeling quite good about the team’s outlook and finding a new GM was the only major item left to cross off their list. Giving Bowman a major role as GM and POHO considering his situation is a puzzling move.

Unfortunately, it looks like many Oilers fans have now begun to question the team’s leadership. It seemed like Oilers CEO Jeff Jackson already had Bowman in mind as the ideal candidate from the beginning, given his experience in the league and winning pedigree. Only time will tell to see how this plays out, but the controversy will always be there.

Actually this may have changed in the last two weeks. There was just a court case by the big media companies.

My entire point was that I would gladly take winning 3 Stanley Cups over having an incompetent GM. Couldn’t care less if he traded Petey for a bag of pucks if we won the cup 3 times.

The fact that you have to keep going to the “you’re defending a rape apologist” card to try and demean me means my point is valid and you have nothing else to counter with.

But would you knowingly hire someone like Bowman knowing what you know now about him?

I would gladly hire someone like Benning who was incompetent and traded away Petey if it meant winning 3 cups.  When Bowman was hired he wasn't covering up sexual assaults.  If it was today after what we know now, I wouldn't hire Bowman to run an ice cream truck.  He should be banned permanently from the league.  Which is why if you go to my very first post in this thread I said this was all Bettman's fault.  Bettman should never have allowed Bowman back in the league, period...

Everyone seems to be blaming Edmonton.  But the person who is directly responsible for this is Gary Bettman.  He is the one who allowed Bowman and Quenneville to be hired again.  If the NHL simply kept both of them suspended indefinitely then we wouldn't be having this issue.
