My point was if Faber is worth 8.5 mill after one good, not great, year, it artificially inflates market value. Fabers contract is a gamble not a sound hockey business decision. Hughes is the most important player to ever play for this franchise. Whatever he costs, he’s costs especially when you consider his bros on other teams. That said, I agree it’s crazy the deals they give out. It’s like us going out into the work force and they give us top dollar after our first year in the field. It’s seems crazy and entitled. Not a fan. Hopefully this blows up in Minnesotas face too

DownUndaCanuck
Risky but he's a 21 year old who just played 24-25 minutes and dropped just under 50 points so you know he'll start putting up Hughes-like numbers as soon as next year. Obviously there's risk signing off a rookie year but I think Minnesota's seen enough and we'd do the same. 8.5M will be a steal if he ends up being a consistent PPG defenceman. I don't know if he'll ever put up Hughes-like numbers as he's still a bit more of a defense first defenseman, but if he can put up around 60 points while still PKing over 3min/game he'll be in the conversation for best all-round defenseman in the league. RJCF96
22 hours ago, Diamonds said: I actually really don't mind the Beagle and Roussel contracts, even with hindsight, other than them being a year too long. We were a bad team and sorely needed some vets to insulate our younger players. Beagle carried the heavily lifting defensively and on the PK which took pressure off Horvat, Pettersson, and even Miller. He literally averaged an OZ start % of 17.6% over this three seasons with the Canucks, the lowest in the entire NHL. A number of players also talked about how having him was like having an extra coach on the ice with them. Roussel had the similar "hard work pays off" story that Burrows did. Undrafted to an NHL regular and was actually producing quite well before he got injured. He showed our young players what it means to work for your spot in the NHL. Yes, we were a bad team and had to overpay both players to get them to come here and they should have been signed for 3 years instead of 4. But, I do think they played an important role in the development of our current core. I don't oppose to signing players like them, but the key is caphit and term. If you give them high caphit, then don't give them term and if you are giving the term the caphit has to be significantly lower. Timing on when the contract expires is also very important. One should never have overpaid bottom 6 contracts still on the books after young elite players ELC expires. ELC contract must expire after those overpaid contracts. Take the current Blackhawks as an example: They overpays both Dickinson and Foglino to $4 million per year contracts. However if you look closely, both of their contract expires in 2 years, and that's exactly aligns with when they have to renew Connor Bedard. Benning signed Beagle and Roussel to 4 year contracts on a significantly higher caphit than market value, even knowing the potential of Quinn Hughes and Elias Pettersson would need a contract in 3 years after their ELC (yes, there is a chance that they may need more seasoning in the AHL or not make a big impact at the NHL level so early and the re-sign could be at a later season or lower caphit). The lack of planning ahead is what makes me mad about those contracts. If they want to bring in Beagle & Rousssel at $3 million caphit, then their contract should be at maximum 2 years. If you want them for 4 years, then their caphit has to be significantly lower. And if the argument is that they won't come here unless you overpay them, then don't bring them here. Target other players who can play similar role at a lower cost (see current management group's approach to depth players in the roster). Those signings were awful no matter what they bring to the team or how much of a leader they are. We already have a surplus of good leaders in the lockerrom. Alex Edler, Chris Tanev, Brandon Sutter were all good leaders for our young players. Horvat was slowly emerging as a young leader himself. There are other options, like taking on other teams overpaid veteran with 1-2 years left on their contract, and we can even gain draft picks and other assets in return. All in all, Beagle and Roussel signings were bad no matter what they brought to the team. Because the caphit and term directly led to us unable to re-sign Pettersson and Hughes to 8 year contracts (we could've had both locked up at anywhere between 8-8.5 x 8 years) and it is also a major reason why Benning "ran out of time" on Tyler Toffoli and Chris Tanev in the 2020 off-season. JeremyCuddles
Dude was averaging 25 minutes a game for them and blocked 150 shots as a rookie. Luckily for them he's only 21 so he can handle it. But damn, get the man some help. I can see him being a great defensive piece who can give you 60+ points. My favourite kind of defenders tbh. The steady two way defenders. canucks curse
Watch sophomore slump kick in bad when they try to play him 25 min/ night again in a non contract year where he’s looking up at a long season of top matchups and tough min on a crap team

HKSR
Man, LAK really goofed with moving out defensive prospects, and RHD too... did you know at one time or another over the past few years, these guys were all property of the Kings? Brock Faber Matt Roy Erik Cernak Sean Walker Sean Durzi

Brock Faber Matt Roy Erik Cernak Sean Walker Sean Durzi Dude. The return for Fiala was Faber plus a 1st. Faber is already arguably more valuable than Fiala, and that 1st rounder became Liam Ohgren! L.A. looked really promising for a while there, but they've made miss after miss lately. Starting with Alex Turcotte. Just a 2nd for Durzi? They've traded away multiple firsts, despite being a mid-tier team. Mark Yannetti should be relieved as director of amateur scouting. This is the same guy who was head scout there when they took Colton Teubert 13th overall, and their draft record has been consistently mediocre since he's been at the helm. Drafting Adrian Kempe and winning a Stanley Cup bought him a lot of time, but most of that championship core was drafted before he was there (Kopitar, Quick, Brown, Martinez, Lewis) or was a no-brainer at the draft (Doughty 2nd overall).

Brock Faber Matt Roy Erik Cernak Sean Walker Sean Durzi Those are all RHD. Most teams are paying a premium to acquire RHD, not trade them. Those 5 guys would literally be the best RHD combination on any team in the NHL. Like not even close. Crazy they traded them all and only kept Clarke and 34 year old Doughty. 1
