St. Louis Blues Offer Sheet Oilers Holloway and Broberg

LTIR? Ryan Rishaug of TSN (Edmonton) was refreshingly honest. The team COULD keep both, but they'd be very uncomfortable doing so. The team would be shorthanded and that is not how they should start the season. It's kind of a blessing that Kane is not healthy and can be put on LTIR for the next little bit.

Of course, a trade is in the works for sure to make space.

I may have missed it in your previous posts - but just curious to know: are you an Edmonton fan?

Broberg's too young and too much potential to give up for a very low 2nd rounder (if St. Louis does well). No shot that they'll let him walk.

That kind of thinking is what gets you into cap trouble though.

In no way is Broberg worth that money, and it puts them at risk of not being able to fill out their roster after the Draisaitl and Bouchard extensions.

is moving Kane enough tho?

To keep Broberg?  Yeah.  But not to keep both Broberg AND Holloway.  Moving Kane would allow them to keep one or the other.

Not right now, but down the road, you'd have to pay him that amount anyway in all likelihood. You don't seem to understand that Broberg isn't some plug defenseman. This is a potential top four defenseman. It's certainly trending that direction, given his playoffs.

Think of it like Silovs. He's a promising goaltender. Different positions obviously, but would you give him up for a 2nd rounder when you don't have the luxury of depth?

I'm not. However, I did refer to sources like Rishaug (Edmonton reporter for TSN), along with Steve Dangle (Toronto fan). The two have very different approaches to the topic, but they both generally agree that Edmonton is not in a good spot. Both players are former first round picks. Dangle specifically said that Broberg is a good young defenseman. And if you put the pieces together of what we all know - that Edmonton is not chock full of defensive prospects - one can readily see that Broberg is not a player that you can just give up for a 2nd rounder. And to be clear, it's not a high 2nd rounder most likely. You're looking at potentially a LOW 2nd rounder, bordering a 3rd round pick. That's NOT a good return at all.

The defenseman was a former 8th overall pick who had a very good season + playoffs at 23 years old. It's clear as day that Edmonton can't afford to let Broberg walk.

They’re in win right now mode though.

What happens if they dump Ceci and slot Broberg into that spot, and he struggles hard. That’s a real possibility. That would seriously hurt their chances of returning to the finals.

Cici would be easier to move than Kane.

But you'd be taking a gamble that Broberg will make up for Cici.

Kane to LTIR is just a stop-gap measure. They would have to probably offer a sweetener to move him (And he has to agree to move) and a team is going to think he's worth the off ice issues.

talk about setting the kid up for pressure. If he doesn't deliver right away the fans will be all over him. But it sounds like the plan was to play him on his opposite side, which is also a dumb thing to do imo with a young player.

I think this is what they'll do, and then wait it out. Or just pull a Vegas, it's not like there will be any consequences.

I think it would be a mid 2nd round pick because I don't think St. Louis will have improved that much to be near the end of the round but regardless of where in the 2nd round the pick is, that's terrible value for Edmonton and a steal for St. Louis

Heard rumors that there is money on Nurse sustaining an injury in training camp ha ha.

Wouldn't be to far fetched to think that broberg flops on his face if thrust into a top 4 role. He has averaged less than 13 minutes a game during his career and even in his 10 game coming out party in the playoffs he averaged less than 16 minutes a game.

If he were unable to break out of his 3rd pairing role that contract would be an albatross for the oilers. It would most likely cost the oilers just to move it next season if he regressed. Oilers should cut bait on him and then use the 2nd rounder to upgrade Ceci.

That being said I hope they match 😜

I don't think people are realizing the shit show that EDM is in right now.  Moving Ceci, and walking from Holloway while keeping Broberg looks like this:

They'd STILL need to clear $1.7M in order to keep Broberg.  That's AFTER trading Ceci for nothing, and walking from Holloway.

And then you look at next season... $1.5M in cap space... 8 forwards signed?

KANE NEEDS TO GO.  Period.

Yeah, a team would also have to want a couple more seasons of Kane. He's 33 years-old and would likely be traded as a player on LTIR, even if he did put up 24 goals and 44 points there's got to be a question as to what he'll look like once he's back, it's hard to say what his production will be like post-surgery.

A team with cap space could eat it, but why would Kane waive his NMC to go to a team that isn't going to be a playoff team? If he sticks with the Oil he will return to the playoffs.

I'm sure he'll do something dumb enough that the oilers will be able to terminate his contract before the season starts.

Hey didn't one of our guys hurt himself picking up a cracker?

Maybe Kane can get something caught in a slot machine.

5.125 million for 2 years for a player with a terrible reputation who could only manage 44 points while being heavily deployed in the Ozone with Draisaitl/Nugget-Hopkins.

That would cost a pretty penny to unload.

Strictly from a production standpoint, he's pretty close to market value.  Maybe about $500k overpaid.  If he wasn't a dick, teams would probably be seriously interested.  It's his off-ice and dressing room antics that are the issue.  An NMC for him doesn't help the situation either.

Not sure if true

Would make sense for them if true. They really can't afford to match on Holloway or Broberg unless they make a trade or two. And the two free agent defencemen that make sense for Edmonton would be Barrie or Schultz. That said they would need to clear cap in order to sign either of those two unless it is a a PTO, which would give them some extra time to move money out.
