Young Stars 2024 Roster?

Recommended Posts

too bad Willander and Fernstrom would not attempt.
some of the guys i'm pretty exciting to see :

(interest goes in this order)

-Kudryavtsev (last russian we have in the whole system)

-Romani

-Patterson

-Lekkerimäkki

-Mynio

then Raty, D-Petey, Klimovich's redemption....

definitively not interested by what Bains has to offer, i guess it's because of the forced hype when he was called to the canucks. I wish him the better, but honestly he was completely lost with the big boys and i never understand why he was as much put forward.

As Rusty Shackleford answered (thanks), i'm talking about Riley Patterson, one of the new picks from this draft.

He had a pretty good prospect camp, go see the scrimmage game.

Blackfish: Predicting the Vancouver Canucks’ 2024 Young Stars Classic lineup

By Dave Hall
Welcome back to our summer edition of the Blackfish Prospect Report.
It’s Tuesday, August 13th, which means we’re exactly one month away from Vancouver Canucks hockey. Sure, it might just be the YoungStars Showcase in Penticton, but we’ll take what we can get.
For those who need a quick refresher, the Youngstars tournament is composed of four teams: The Vancouver Canucks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Winnipeg Jets. Each team will play three games throughout the weekend, each showing off their system’s youngsters.
Unlike past seasons, the Canucks’ organization finds itself in a promising position, with enough in-house talent to ice a full roster on its own, should they choose to do so.
In 2022, the first year the event resumed after a three-year hiatus, the Canucks invited 16 unsigned free-agent or AHL-signed players to fill out the roster. Last year, that number dropped to nine. This year, there’s a strong chance they’ll invite even fewer, which is a direct correlation to the team’s position with a growing system.

So, what could this year’s roster look like? Let’s dive into predicting the names that should be in attendance for this year’s event.
Before we delve into the potential roster, it’s important to note the players who won’t be making an appearance due to NCAA commitments and European league schedules.
We can confidently say that the fans of Penticton will not see the likes of Tom Willander or the club’s most recent third-round draftee, Melvin Fernström.
Willander will be back at Boston University preparing for his sophomore school season. Fernström will be gearing up for his draft-plus-one season with Örebro’s junior or senior team.
The following names will also be absent from the event.

NCAA Prospects

  • Daimon Gardner (St. Cloud)
  • Jackson Dorrington (Northeastern)
  • Aku Koskenvuo (Harvard)
  • Matthew Perkins (Minnesota-Duluth)
  • Jackson Kunz (North Dakota)
  • Aiden Celebrini (Boston University)

European Prospects

  • Lucas Forsell (Färjestad/SHL)
  • Hugo Gabrielson (Nybro Vikings IF/HockeyAllsvenskan)
Finally, for those who missed the news, Dmitri Zlodeev has returned to his home country after signing a KHL deal earlier in the summer. He will also be absent.

Projected Goaltenders

We expect to see the same three goaltenders as last year.
Nikita Tolopilo – Coming off a strong AHL rookie season, we expect Tolopilo to be the main attraction in net for a consecutive year.
Ty Young – The 2022 fifth-rounder will enjoy his third Youngstars just days after his 20th birthday.
Jonathan Lemieux (Unsigned) – Signed to an AHL deal, Lemieux posted a 17-16-3 record down in Kalamazoo in 2023-24. We expect him to carve out the third and final netminding spot for a second straight year.

Projected Defencemen

This year’s defensive group will be an interesting mix of young talent and seasoned prospects. The Canucks have a solid group of nine signed names who could receive an invitation, along with two to three unsigned defenders likely playing in Abbotsford or Kalamazoo.

Left Side
Kirill Kudryavtsev – Considered a lock invitee, Kudryavtsev will head into his third YoungStars event to kick off an important fall as a 20-year-old. With 202 OHL games under his belt, he’ll look to strut the much-welcomed two-way game that he’s developed since last year’s training camp and fight for a spot on the Abbotsford backend.
Sawyer Mynio – Taking on his second event, Mynio is fresh off an impressive draft-plus-one campaign. The local Kamloops native has already gotten some summer game reps under his belt, having just taken part in the World Junior Summer Showcase. He had a good showing in hopes of earning a spot at the upcoming World Juniors.
Elias Pettersson – The feisty Swedish defender will be a focal point for fans, making his first appearance after spending two years post-draft overseas. Pettersson will take on his first full season in Abbotsford and is expected to bring big things (pun intended) to Abby’s six-man rotation.

Basile Sansonnens – The 6’4 seventh-round pick from the 2024 draft is expected to take his talents to the QMJHL with Rimouski Oceanic. YoungStars will provide a first look at how he handles North American ice.
Right Side
Cole McWard – Over on the right side, we anticipate to see McWard. At 23, he’s now considered an old veteran among this backend and considering he’s on the cusp of call-up duty, he will be looking to get some game reps in as early as possible.
Parker Alcos – Drafted in the sixth round of 2024, the Port Moody product will make his debut within the Canucks organization before heading back to the WHL as a sophomore with the Edmonton Oil Kings.
Christian Felton – The 24-year-old defender, recently signed out of college, is expected to begin his pro career with Abbotsford after a four-year NCAA career. He’s no stranger to British Columbia, as he enjoyed a season as a Vernon Viper (BCHL) before turning to the collegiate level.

Those are the names that we fully expect to be there, but there are a few others that could round out the remaining roster spots.
Possible Additions
Jett Woo – Now 24, Woo is already considered a grizzled veteran on the Abby backend. He did not attend last year’s Showcase, and the Canucks might opt to use his spot for a younger player.
Akito Hirose – At 25, Hirose would be considered the oldest Canucks’ representative at the Showcase. While the previous regime was high on him, it remains to be seen if the current staff feels the same. He could get the call, but it’s not guaranteed.
Joseph Arntsen (unsigned) – The 21-year-old left-shot defender is coming off of a four-year WHL stint with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, serving as the captain for the last two. The left side is quite crowded in Abby, but we anticipate seeing Arntsen in AHL action at some point throughout the year. We will not be shocked to hear that he’s been asked to show up to show off what he can do on the ice.

Layton Ahac (unsigned) – Also signed to an AHL deal, Ahac has already seen 148 games in the American League as a member of the Henderson Silver Knights (Vegas affiliate). He could snag an invitation if there’s room, though we anticipate Arntsen will be prioritized over the two.
Now, let’s take a look at the forward group. Like the defensive group, we’ll start with the names we anticipate to be locked into a spot.

Projected Forwards

Centre
Max Sasson – At 24, Sasson is eyeing NHL looks this season. He’ll look to showcase to the local fan base why he’s considered an option in his second go-around at the event.
Aatu Räty – Räty is coming off his best statistical season and showed significant development in 2023-24. We expect, or hope, him to be a standout during the tournament.

Tristen Nielsen – Nielsen could play up the middle or on the wing, but we expect to see him return for his third YoungStars regardless of where he plays. Expect to see him bringing his typical tenacity to the lineup.
Ty Mueller – Fresh off three seasons at the University of Nebraska Omaha, Mueller is set to make his YoungStars debut. In last week’s Blackfish, we predicted Mueller would see games in Kalamazoo to start the season only because of the crowded competition in Abby. A strong tournament, combined with a stellar training camp, could put that all to rest and earn him a spot in Abby out the gate.
Left Wing
Arshdeep Bains – A leader among the group, Bains will be tasked with taking the younger forwards under his wing and bestowing some wisdom as an undrafted prospect who’s now seen his first sniff in the NHL. While there’s a chance he might be left off to make room for others, we expect him to be there and be a top-line player to boot.

Josh Bloom – After being sent back to the OHL last year, Bloom has a lot to prove. He’s looking to make the jump to AHL hockey full-time and will be eager to show his progression. After what we saw at Development Camp, we expect him to bring it shift by shift.
Vilmer Alriksson – Alriksson, the towering Swede, has done nothing but impress since being drafted in 2023. If his showing is anything like his development camp performance, he’ll be hard to miss on the ice – in more ways than one.
Ty Glover – Acquired in the Jack Rathbone trade, Glover is expected to challenge for a permanent role in Abbotsford. Known for his speed and shot, he’ll look to carve out a more defined role after being caught in a classic case of “too good for the ECHL, not quite good enough to carve out a solid role in the AHL.”

Right Wing
Jonathan Lekkerimäki – The Canucks’ prized prospect, Lekkerimäki, will make his Penticton debut. All eyes will be on him, and we’re hoping for a gigantic weekend filled with ample chances to show off his incredible release. He, alone, is worth the price of admission.
Danila Klimovich – After a disappointing season, Klimovich will be looking for redemption. With the spotlight on Lekkerimäki, Klimovich has a chance to quietly put together a strong tournament and win back the hearts of Canucks Nation. Let’s hope for some power play time and timely goals to gain some pre-training camp confidence.
Riley Patterson and Anthony Romani – Finally, we have the two recent draftees, Patterson and Romani. For what it’s worth, Patterson can play up the middle or on the wing, but we have him on the wing for today’s purposes. Patterson put on a show in the Dev. Camp skirmish and showed the crowd that he has a few tricks up his sleeve. As for Romani, he’s fresh off of an incredible OHL year of 58 goals and 111 points, and we hope he can bring some of that touch to the table in Penticton.

That’s 12 names up front, but we know that the Canucks will look to bring roughly 15 names. This means we could also see the older returnees to round out the remaining roster spots.

Additional Forwards

Linus Karlsson – Absent last year, Karlsson could be a veteran presence in the lineup.
Chase Wouters (unsigned) – The Abbotsford captain, initially invited as an undrafted free agent in 2022, could also return to provide leadership.
Cooper Walker (unsigned) – Walker, signed to an AHL contract, was an invitee at last year’s event and could easily see an invitation at this year’s event. The former Guelph Storm captain split his 2023-24 season between Abby and Kalamazoo and will likely see the same fate next year.
Dino Kambeitz – Recently signed to an AHL deal, Kambeitz could fill out the roster as a physical presence.

Finally, there’s a list of unsigned or undrafted players from the CHL and NCAA that the Canucks have been monitoring. Those players could be invited to round out the roster if they’re not committed to college programs.
The final prediction:
Arshdeep Bains
Aatu Räty
Jonathan Lekkerimäki
Josh Bloom
Max Sasson
Danila Klimovich
Vilmer Alriksson
Tristen Nielsen
Anthony Romani
Ty Glover
Ty Mueller
Riley Patterson
Addtional names: Linus Karlsson, Chase Wouters, Cooper Walker & Dino Kambeitz
Kirill Kudryavtsev
Cole McWard
Elias Pettersson
Christian Felton
Sawyer Mynio
Parker Alcos
Basile Sansonnens
Joseph Arntsen (LHD) (unsigned)
Nikita Tolopilo
Ty Young
Jonathan Lemieux

Super excited for hockey to be starting up again and have been digging into some of our prospects.

Overeager draft pick Anthony Romani is intriguing as a prospect.  OHL's leading goal scorer.

GP: 68. G: 58. A: 53 PTS: 111

From THW

What has truly helped Romani make this jump is that his high hockey IQ finally came through in the offensive zone. He uses his IQ to be a strong playmaker with the puck, finding his teammates and making plays that few others can see happening. His passing ability is comparable to that of a football quarterback, as he can use different touches on the puck to make certain passes.

But the third-year Ontario Hockey League (OHL) veteran’s playmaking abilities are not the only factor that helped his game reach the next level; he has a high-level shot with a punch. He also has strong skating abilities and a shiftiness to his game, allowing him to start plays coming through the neutral zone and further into the offensive zone as well.

“Romani demonstrates elite hockey sense that few can match. His ability to evade coverage and get open for passes to unleash his much-improved shot is exceptional. While his stats portray him primarily as a goal scorer, he also makes plays from the wing, showcasing very good vision and a knack for finding teammates in scoring positions.”- Dominic Tiano, OHLWriters

“Romani demonstrates proficiency in carrying the puck through the neutral zone, leveraging his above-average skating skills. His keen hockey IQ translates into quick decision-making, allowing him to make timely passes to teammates upon entering the offensive zone.”- Blake McGuire, FCHockey

Any word on which prospects and/or invites will actually be on the Canucks' Young Stars 2024 roster?

I remember back when we had Brendan Gaunce, Nicklas Jensen and Frank Corrado attended the tournament - the Flames, Oilers, and Jets got upset with the Canucks for bringing a veteran laden group to the youngstars tourney. (The previous three had considerable amount of AHL/NHL games under their belt that totaled above 100 games played) which led to a rule for the tournament that players were eligible to play as long as they were on their ELC and played under 100 north american pro games.

In past tourney's you usually see the CHL based prospects, recent signed draft picks and AHL based prospects who have played under 100 North American pro games played in this tourney.

So you likely won't see Jett Woo, Arshdeep Bains, Linus Karlsson, Danila Klimovich and Aatu Raty at this tourney.

But you will see the rest like McWard, Lekkerimaki, D-Petey, Patterson, Romani, Kudryavtsev, Mueller, Bloom, Mynio, Sasson, and Felton at this tournament.

If the prospects don't include those 5 "vets" you mentioned, then they'll need to bring in some "invitees" for the tourney I'm guessing.
