Do you happen to know if the folks at Stax Records ever shared their southern soul sound to cover a movie? Man, what a lineup when you look at it. I dont know about an entire soundtrack, but they've certainly contributed to many great ones. Probably the biggest surprise, in my opinion, would be Mavis Staple singing the theme song to National Lampoon Christmas Vacation..........hip hip hooray for Christmas vacation 1
Zimmyparttwo
Anyone in the mood for Spinal Tap? Those guys could actually play and they wrote some really offensive but catchy original parodies!

Her performance of The Weight in the Last Waltz is a stunning accomplishment even though it was probably no more than four lines of lead and the rest harmony background vocals. 2

Zimmyparttwo
For some indie/alternative/chill pleasure try the Garden State soundtrack from about twenty years ago.
JoeyJoeJoeJr. Shabadoo
The only 3 I can remember owning right now. Dazed and Confused, Blow, and last, and certainly least, Juice. The first 2 are bangers. Juice had a couple of good tunes. For the most part soundtracks were a way of getting a variety of music on one album instead of buying all of the albums individually. Once downloading and burning became a thing there wasn't much need for any of it anymore. Now, for me anyway, soundtracks are mostly useful for reminding me that I like a song so I can stream it later. Or if I'm trying to remember a song I can google the soundtrack of the movie it was in. Obviously original content is exempt from this concept but unfortunately I have an unhealthy disdain for musicals so that rules out a lot. I don't consider School of Rock a musical much to my sons protestations. 1
Jess
Hans Zimmer is perhaps the greatest in my mind. Interstellar is one of my favourites and Inception is up there too, but a lot of his movies have great music. Borislav Slavov is a lesser known one, but he's composed music for great music games like Crysis 2, Divinity: Original Sin 2, and Baldur's Gate 3. 1

Classic Throwing a relatively unknown John Hughes soundtrack out there Some Kind of Wonderful. Just great post punk 80's British invasion music.......but not your overplayed Thompson twins, Depeche mode, culture club etc etc. Some Kind of Wonderful -- I couldn't have said it better! I still listen to the CD.

Dont know who did it. Soundtracks arn't too big for me. For song sound tracks I might go Donnie Darko,Pump up the Volume, Singles. I listen to Gary Jules cover of Mad World a lot. I also have a copy of Tears for Fears original version. Gary's version is more haunting IMO. A combination of the movie and his rendition.
Ilunga
Stewart Copeland, The Police drummer composed/scored the music for a few great soundtracks. Rumble Fish amongst others. Randy Newman composed/scored the music for a few great soundtracks, especially for kids. As for a movie with songs it's hard to go past, The Watchmen Unforgettable-Nat King Cole The Times They are a Changing-Bob Dylan The Sound of Silence- Simon and Garfunkel Me and Bobby McGee Janis Joplin Pirate Jenny-Nina Simone I'm Your Boogeyman-KC and the Sunshine Band Hallelujah-Leonard Cohen All along the Watchtower-Jimmy Hendrix You're my Thrill-Billie Holiday 2

Randy Newman, an artist in his category, imo and a soundtrack genius. Obviously the Toy Story franchise, but I really love his song from Major League "Burn On" Burn on Big River, Burn on...........as they show the bleakness of Cleveland
