Report: Flyers Set Price For Prospect Alexei Kolosov

The Philadelphia Flyers have been without goalie prospect Alexei Kolosov at rookie camp and it appears as though he has decided to play in the KHL again this season. It is very possible the issue is with the Flyers and other teams have already been inquiring about the 22-year-old goaltender's availability and price.

Kolosov came over to North America and played a couple games in the AHL at the end of last season. This was expected to be the transition and he would be a part of training camp as well as battle for a spot on the Flyers this season. As of now, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Elliotte Friedman noted that the Flyers are still trying to figure out a path forward and how things are going to go with Kolosov. The expectation is that he is not going to come over this season if he's a member of Philadelphia's organization. This would make it the second prospect in the past year that wanted out before even playing a game for the Flyers.

It was also revealed by teams that have inquired about Kolosov that the asking price is a second-round pick at this time. That can of course change as the situation changes and what his playing future looks like. The Flyers aren't just waiting patiently for him to join the team and also aren't just going to move him because he may choose to play in the KHL this season. He is a good goalie prospect and the goaltending situation in Philadelphia is questionable, so he could be a part of their future very soon.

Flyers Making Alexei Kolosov Available In Trade Talks

September 16th, 2024 at 2:06pm CST • By Brennan McClain

The Philadelphia Flyers continue to look for a resolution with goaltending prospect Alexei Kolosov regarding his future with the organization. The young netminder spurned the Flyers this week by not reporting to their rookie camp and he’s not expected to join the team for training camp either as he hopes to return to his home country of Belarus for the 2024-25 season. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman wrote this morning that Philadelphia has made Kolosov available to interested teams but there’s no indication a change of scenery would dissuade his desire to return home.

A lack of communication has been made apparent between the Flyers’ brass and Kolosov as many people within the organization are confused by Kolosov’s request. Kevin Kurz of The Athletic recently spoke to the head coach of the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms, Ian Laperriere, and he said players on the Phantoms made repeated attempts for Kolosov to join them for team activities but were rejected.

Kolosov debuted with the organization at the end of last season. The young netminder skated in two games for the Phantoms while securing a 1-1-0 record with a .885 save percentage. He spent most of last year with the KHL’s Dinamo Minsk (the team he is looking to rejoin) producing a 22-21-3 record in 47 games with a .907 SV%.  He holds a career .909 SV% over four years in the KHL and does not appear interested in continuing his development in North America.

The Flyers are reportedly asking for a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft but many teams are hesitant to pay that price. There has not been any confirmation either way if Kolosov is not comfortable playing in a foreign place or if he’s unhappy with the Flyers organization specifically. No team will sacrifice a second-round pick in a relatively deep draft class if Kolosov has no intentions of returning to North America. If Kolosov is willing to return to the NHL under a new organization it is reasonable to assume the Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, Colorado Avalanche, and Tampa Bay Lightning would maintain some level of interest in the former 78th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft.

The Flames could use a stronger long-term option next to Dustin Wolf and the Blackhawks may be looking for someone to upseat Drew Commesso as the organization’s top goaltending prospect. Colorado’s reportedinterest in Yaroslav Askarov indicates the team is looking to address their long-term answer in the crease despite their limited draft capital. Lastly — the Lightning currently has Los Angeles’ and Toronto’s second-round picks in the 2025 NHL Draft thanks to a couple of trades this offseason. The team may be willing to part with one of them to solve their backup goaltending situation heading into the 2024-25 regular season.

Briere has a tendency of overvaluing his players. Remember when he said he would retain like a million off the risto contract if they got a 1st LOL and then reality set in.

Benning would'be been all over Ristolainen. I can see something like this happening:

***Benning trades 2025 first + Elias Pettersson (Defenseman) for Rasmus Ristolainen at $1 million retained***

"We acquired a Top 4 defenseman who is a right shot, a big defenseman who can skate and he can be prescence on our blueline. He shown in the past that he is capable of putting together 40+ points season... I think this move would really bolster our blueline and make our team better and harder to play against. Having a player his calibre with retention on his salary is a bargain for us. We love Elias Pettersson, he improved a lot since getting drafted and had a good prospect tournament for us in Penticton. But he is still atleast another 2-3 years away to be an impact player for us, and we are getting Rasmus, who will be able to step in and play top 4 minutes for us right away."

***Ristolainen goes on to put up 11 points in 62 games and is -35 by the end of the season***

"It was a tough transition for him, moving him and his family out here to the Westcoast... It took him sometime to settle in and learn the new system.. He needed time to adjust both on and off the ice and then when he finally settled in, unfortunately injuries happen and he missed sometime and had to reset himself when he returns to the line up. I think he will bounce back and have a solid year for us in the upcoming season."

***Ristolainen again plays 58 games and puts up 9 points and again -29 at the end of the second season. Benning tries to trade him in the off-season, no takers and he knows he dug himself into this hole***

"It was a tough couple of years here for Rasmus in Vancouver. We hope to work this out with him and his family. It wasn't easy for him the last couple years with injures and all that. He is a professional and we are all working together, with his agent to do what's right both for him and the team. That said, it's hard to make moves with teams all tight up to the salary cap. We will continue to work with Rasmus and also looking at some free agents that can help with our blueline."

***Benning finally caved in, dump Ristolainen with 1 year remaining on his contract by paying a 2027 1st round pick as sweetener. He then proceeds to sign 2 more bottom pairing defenseman to $4 million+ contracts for 3+ years to play top 4 minutes. Team continues to suck. Rinse and repeat***
