Canucks training camp 'nerve wracking' for new addition DeBrusk

PENTICTON, B.C. — Jake DeBrusk had a bit of an unfamiliar feeling as he prepared to hit the ice with his Vancouver Canucks teammates Thursday — butterflies.

The 27-year-old winger is no stranger to NHL training camps, but after seven seasons with the Boston Bruins, Thursday marked his first time skating with a new team.

“It was actually pretty nerve wracking. I was a little nervous going out there," DeBrusk said after the Canucks' first day of training camp in Penticton, B.C.

"It kind of caught me off guard, actually. But it was good. The guys are competing and it was fast out there. Trying to get chemistry and things like that, so it was exciting.”

DeBrusk inked a seven-year, US$38.5-million deal with the Canucks when the league's free agent market opened on July 1, and was quickly pencilled in as a linemate for Vancouver's star centre, Elias Pettersson.

The duo skated together in drills on Thursday, and DeBrusk was excited about the result.

"I think I've seen a lot of really wicked plays by (Pettersson)," he said. "And I'm sort of still catching up a little bit, but I'm starting to figure some of it out, I think. Any time you have a player like that that's so dynamic, you want to just be consistent for him and just have someone that he can rely on."

DeBrusk, who put up 19 goals and 21 assists in 80 games for the Bruins last season, brings speed and tenacity to the Canucks, Pettersson said.

“He’s skilful, but then works hard," he said. "He plays the body and goes to the dirty areas. But I think it’s the combination of physical play and smartness.”

Developing chemistry takes time both on the ice and away from the rink, Pettersson added.

“It’s just hanging out," he said. "When you’re, I guess, good at hockey, you just figure it out on the ice. And we’ll continue taking steps every day. I’m just excited to get going.”

DeBrusk is among a handful of new additions to Vancouver's roster.

The Canucks also added forwards Danton Heinen, Kiefer Sherwood and Daniel Sprong, and defencemen Derek Forbort and Vincent Desharnais in free agency.

Desharnais was already familiar with Vancouver's playing style, having had a close-up look as a member of the Edmonton Oilers squad that eliminated the Canucks from the playoffs in a gritty, seven-game second-round series in May.

The first day of training camp provided new insight for the six-foot-seven, 226-pound blue liner, however.

“I understand why they were so hard to play against last year,” he said with a laugh.

While Desharnais contributed a goal, 10 assists and 54 penalty minutes to the Oilers last season, Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin has said he believes the 28-year-old from Laval, Que., has more to give.

Desharnais agreed.

"That's why I'm here, to get better," he said. "I think there's a lot of small details I can add to my game. I'm a late bloomer, and I want to keep learning, I want to keep improving myself, and every day to get a better mindset every day. Every morning, I just try to get better."

Transitioning to a new team has been smooth so far, Desharnais said.

“I feel like I’m part of the team already," he said, adding that he's spent much of the last week and a half hanging out with his new teammates away from the rink. "I’m very excited to start travelling, to start playing games because you get even closer.”

Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet knows better than most what it takes for a player to settle in with a new locker room, having played for six different teams over the course of 18 seasons in the NHL.

Vancouver's veteran players have done a good job of making the recent additions feel welcome, he said.

"I've been on other teams where it takes you a while, maybe it's not as close," the coach said. "But this team, whoever comes in here, it’s ‘Hey, you're welcome’ and they're hanging together. So I credit those guys for that environment.”

Petey likes Lekkerimaki on his wing (with DeBrusk), and it sounds like they were good together. Does that mean Sprong will be in the bottom 6? Any possibility that Lek makes the team out of camp? I heard Dhali mention earlier today that they'll likely keep Lek in Abbotsford as he'll play top minutes, rather than him playing minimal minutes in the bottom 6 to start. But what if he's good enough to crack the big team's top 6 and builds chemistry with Petey and DeBrusk?

He looked great at my daughter's wedding a few weeks ago 🙂. Very eager to succeed. I'm not really worried about the Young Stars tournament, I'm more curious to see how he does in the main camp.

Congrats man!  And to your daughter...

Awesome to see your family moving along isn't it!

My daughter is 23 if you wanna send Klim here...  (joking, she has a beau)  😄

So does he, they've been married for a few years already 🙂. His wife is a sweetheart. And now they also have a dog that she's bringing here soon from Belarus.

No.I am just realistic. We have back up goalie and no idea when Demko is back.Guy is more injured then not.Sooner or later we have to address that.Would be stupid to close eyes and pretend all is flower.I dont hate on him, wish him all the best.

Then your sarcasm is already on full blast. Perhaps you should mute it a bit. Maybe more than a bit. Just sayin'.

How is everybody feeling?

I think we are better than the start of last year! We cannot, or I'm not anyway, counting Zadorov & Lindholm.

Presuming Demko comes good? the 2knd question, really, is if Desharnais on his natural side is better than Ian Cole on his off side?  He will, of course be bigger & add nasty side even Joshua did not offer? I do not think he will be relied on to move the puck too often, he's ability to clear it or make a first pass? With Demko will probably the barometer of whether we are a 3r place team, or taking on Edmonton for first...

Center is just as if not more solid, with experience better than ever! Wings faster, Hoglander a year better. I love that Tochet is talking about triggering our break & playing faster. Busting out for breaks, putting pressure on other teams. Which means a quick South to North pass not chip out by Sousy, Desharnais, Myers, to players like Heinen, Garland, DeBrusk.  I am drooling at Pettersson & someday, soon, Lekkerimaki.  When Hughes carries up, it takes away opposition cheating to cover a breaking wing as they also have to possible jump in to center ice to stop him. So those stretch passes should absolutely open up.

Our best three prospects in several years are from the doorstep to 1 & 1/2 years away; Willander, Lekkerimaki & D Petey. Who project to fill out our line up & style beautifully!

Even with Lindholm the Canucks didn't play as well as they had earlier, they were disjointed and Lindholm put a monkey wrench into the chemistry of the team. We went from a team that could roll 4 lines into a 2 line team.  Petey and Lindholm didn't jell because they're both centers. So Lindholm got Jodhua and Garland and Petey got the shaft with Mikheyev.   1 goal in 69 games?

If Lekkerimäki makes the team, he's not playing in the bottom six.

Debrusk is well spoken,  reminds me a lot of the way JT speaks.

I observed this too. He's very well spoken, could find a place in broadcasting when his playing days are over.

Let me present to you the Canucks 2nd line

Maybe one day. I don't think Lekkerimäki makes the team this year. If he does, that would really surprise me. I think he probably definitely needs to get stronger. In the picture above, he looks a little small, or is that jersey of his big?

Debrusk looks good in blue and white.

I went to day 1 and here are my thoughts:

1. Day 1 is short on ice session for both squads, they did go to other rink that is attached but players didnt start going on ice till after 10 and they were done on main ice with 2 ice cleanings by 12:45ish.

2. Was nice seeing Demko out earlier same with McWard, Demko was moving well and seemed to flex is left knee a couple times but had lots of micro breaks.

3. People need to enjoy every game of just how special Hughes is, man that guy is skilled and another big year could be coming his way! Great to see him come to the tunnel and happily sign autographs before going on the ice. Very disappointing to see # 6,9,40 NOT stop and sign anything...from my view point unless they came out before NOT in gear like Hughes, but the kids would have screamed for them just like they did for Hughes would they not!?

4. New Fanatics Player jerseys are $200, $100 for blank skate jersey, won't catch me dead buying OrcaBay... I will do a tug test on them tomorrow to see quality. there are jersey tiers i Think?

5. Raty, was impressive, he looks quicker will never be a Raymond type of speedster but he looks better.

6. Sorry to RomanP, but Klimovich looks like a bust, he looked lost on ice, fumble the puck quite a bit...its day 1, we will see tomorrow but I expected him to look better. I hope I am wrong because he was a 2nd rd pick and we need prospects to pan out but i don't see an NHL caliber player. Bounce around AHL then Europe or KHL imo

7. Heinen in the drills with JT & BB looked like it could be a thing.

8. With Joshua out, I would love to see an experimental line in pre season at least of Debrusk EP40 Garland.

9. Sprong- has a good shot, maybe Tocchet and Canucks will live with his Defensive deficiencies and be a Kuzmenko-lite? 20-30G 50-60pts for under 1m....would hope Tocchet could let the D zone play slide. Tocchet did have conversations with Sprong.

10. Quiet group on the ice, not much talking. Sedins giving jabs and having fun out on the ice, pretty cool to see former NHLers I watched now coaching out team...Tocchet, Goncharm Foote, Samuelsson, Komisarek, Pogge, & the Twins of course.

11. Lekkerimaki- you see his skill, man I hope this kid hits for us, we could sure use it!

12. Hronek- he is a pain in the ass to play against, hope he can use his slapshot and be a sami Salo threat for us. I envisioned him being a 15-20g D man with us but his shoulder might be a long term issue, we did trade for him when injured.

I think Tocch's system will help the goalies, this is a very stingy team because the forwards come back and help the back check, the ones that wouldn't do it are gone and replaced with 2 way forwards. This isn't Bruce's Canucks anymore.  So I'm more optimistic

Dhali is out to lunch on this one, Lekke has 1 path to make the team and it's with Petey. If not with Petey it's Abby. He's not playing bottom 6 for either team
