(Trade) Canucks trade Poolman

Primarily just trading a 4th round pick to clear cap space and allow the team to operate out of LTIR this season.

Brannstrom was a first round pick based on skating and puck-moving ability but he never developed into a legitimate "offensive defenceman" at the NHL level. He is small, soft, and is so-so defensively. And any NHL team that wants him (including Colorado) can pick him up off waivers.

Not sure exactly why he was included in the trade. Colorado would probably have put him on waivers so by trading him they free up a contract slot and save some money (just cash). Or maybe the Canucks wanted him, hoping he would clear waivers and be a potential injury back-up.

But it is not like the Canucks are short of LHDs in Abby. They have Wolanin, Brisebois, D-Petey, Hirose, and Kuds already.

All of those D though need to develop in the AHL. So does Brann

It's a pretty darn good trade to help us get into the LTIR position that we want, totally fine giving up the 4th we got for dumb dumb podz to move the money out finally.

On Paper bringing Brannstrom in seems like a wise move and he would add an extra dimension to our big lumbering bottom pair, but lemme tell ya, I've watched this lad play a bunch of times and he's an absolute nightmare in his own end. So soft he'll make Philip Larsen look like Big Z - any team will get caved in with him on the ice once the puck is dumped in deep. Good offensively and who knows maybe our coaching staff can pull off some miracles with him, but there's little surprise he's been sent down straight away.

I’m still pissed at Juulsen for costing the Canucks that playoff game against the Oilers by being a moron and skating out of position to make a hit in the final minute when we were tied!

It's a team loss, stop looking for scapegoats.

It's also a learning experience.   About the only thing Juulsen needs to clean up in his game is learning when to, and when to thorough his weight around which also happens to be a big part of what he brings to the game.   Other players make bone headed plays, and nothing is made of it.  Sure if it becomes a pattern then that's a problem.  I'm sure he remember's and won't do it again.

Some teams he'd be a good depth option for, others not as much.   And we need a balance.

Totally agree. Kind of like how Jalen Chatfield was with us.

Crazy to think this guy only played 43 games for us and that was still somehow more than how many games Ferland played for us.

I mean it’s sad, really.

Concussions are brutal, one of the most unfortunate symptoms of contact sports.
Ferland at his best would have helped this team big time, and Poolman had the size and acumen to be an NHL regular.

Gotta say though, it’s almost bizarre to no longer have any problem contracts. Our biggest thorn is the OEL buyout, and even that is manageable.

For sure, concussions robbed us of Baer as well who I thought was a great complimentary top 6 winger. Ferland was actually quite good in his 14 games for us too. But yeah. Just wanted to look back at their respective times with us, didn't fully realize how little we seen of either of them.

Will brannstrom clear ?

Probably.  Most teams have their roster set for tomorrow, so are unlikely to take on

a questionable dman this late in the game.  I wish a team would grab him, Abby

already have 7LD battling to get some ice time.

Wow, Alvin just doesn't stop.  This isn't just about accrued cap space at the deadline but running a 23-man roster during the season.  Before this move, some of the scenarios for staying out of LTIR had us running with a 21-man roster, which in practice would mean losing players like Aman, Friedman or Juulsen on waivers and being vulnerable to not covering injuries on road trips.  This fixes all of that.

Brannstrom is a worthwhile project if he clears waivers.  Wolanin aside, we don't have any real LD depth with NHL experience so this helps.  If he can finally adapt to physical play and tighten up his coverage Brannstrom can still become a useful player.

Your math is bang on. But it's highly dependent on what happens through the season in terms of injuries and call ups.

Let's assume this is the opening roster:

Heinen. Miller. Boeser.

DeBrusk. Pettersson. Sprong.

Hoglander. Suter. Garland.

Bains. Blueger. Sherwood.

Aman.

Hughes. Hronek.

Soucy. Myers.

Forbort. Desharnais.

Friedman. Juulsen.

Silovs. Lankinen.

IR: Joshua. Demko.

And here is how the season plays out:

Cap space for first 30 days based on opening roster = $499k

Joshua returns after 30 days. Bains is sent down. Cap space for next 40 days = $1.31m

Demko returns 70 days into season. Silovs is sent down. Cap space for next 30 days = $2.16m

Canucks need an injury callup, e.g. Bains for 30 days. Cap space for next 30 days =$1.35m

Bains sent down until TDL. Cap space for next 19 days until TDL = $2.16m

In the above scenario the cap space accrued by the TDL would be $5.77m.

Bottom 6 really lacks size and nastiness other than Sherwood!! Really sucks Blais didn't work out!!
