I’m not shocked with Pods.

i would have preferred when he went to abby he stayed there all the way through the rest of the season and the playoffs.

i feel like his whole career he’s not been at the right place at the right time for his development.

im hoping this tenure in the AHL is truly beneficial for him.

in both confidence building and learning how he needs to play to be an every day nhler kids got the tools and the work ethic it would be an absolute shame for him not to become a regular at the very minimum.

as for production he needs that opportunity to be the guy. I hope he becomes that guy in abby this season and he doesn’t get an early call up.

The Russian league really stalled his development in my opinion during some critical development years.I agree he should have been in Abbotsford under colliton’s tutelage.got the tools.could be our Torres light if he puts it together.

From Russian Messier to Torres light in just 2 years lol.

Pods needs to accept (to play in the National League) he has to be a crasher and banger. No reaching to poke at pucks. Got to go through the puck with force and create collisions. If he can make that shift in how he sees himself as a layer then he will have a long career.

That’s exactly how I see him.if he could dial in his reads and play that style he could bring good value to the line up.

Yup. Pods needs to play a very simple game. He reads where the puck is going and then arrives with speed and collides with any opposing player. His job is to free up pucks (and create space) for his supporting teammate who will make a play. Pods doesn’t need to come up with the puck. He needs to make it so his teammates do.   I think Tocchet calls that being a “wall guy”?

Story by Mike Gould, Canucksarmy

Vasily Podkolzin, Sheldon Dries, Akito Hirose among 20 players cut from Canucks training camp

Vasily Podkolzin, Sheldon Dries, Akito Hirose among 20 players cut from Canucks training camp

The Vancouver Canucks announced 20 additional cuts to their training camp roster on Sunday morning.

Among them is Vasily Podkolzin, the Canucks’ 2019 first-round draft pick who split the 2022–23 season between Vancouver and the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks.

All 20 players cut on Monday have been assigned to Abbotsford, although five of them will have to clear waivers first. Jett Woo, Matt Irwin, Sheldon Dries, Jack Rathbone, and Zach Sawchenko will all be made available to the NHL’s 31 other teams before they can report to the AHL.

Additionally, Chase Wouters, Quinn Schmiemann, and John Stevens had all been attending Canucks camp on professional tryout contracts while on AHL deals. They’ve been released from their PTOs to report to Abbotsford.

In addition to Podkolzin, the Canucks assigned the following 11 waiver-exempt players on NHL contracts directly to the AHL:

  • Danila Klimovich
  • Aatu Räty
  • Max Sasson
  • Linus Karlsson
  • Arshdeep Bains
  • Tristen Nielsen
  • Josh Bloom
  • Aidan McDonough
  • Akito Hirose
  • Filip Johansson
  • Nikita Tolopilo

With these cuts, the Canucks now have 25 players remaining in their training camp:

Forwards (13): Anthony Beauvillier, Teddy Blueger, Brock Boeser, Phil Di Giuseppe, Conor Garland, Nils Höglander, Dakota Joshua, Andrei Kuzmenko, Ilya Mikheyev, J.T. Miller, Elias Pettersson, Jack Studnicka, Pius Suter.

Defencemen (9): Guillaume Brisebois, Ian Cole, Filip Hronek, Quinn Hughes, Noah Juulsen, Cole McWard, Tyler Myers, Carson Soucy, Christian Wolanin.

Goaltenders (3): Thatcher Demko, Casey DeSmith, Arturs Silovs.

Overall, it was an underwhelming training camp and preseason for the 22-year-old Podkolzin. Right from day one of camp, Podkolzin was given a golden opportunity to play alongside JT Miller and Brock Boeser, but just hasn’t looked comfortable this preseason.

Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet has spoken at length about how much he likes Podkolzin and admires his work ethic.

Earlier this week, we wrote about how playing in the AHL under the watchful eye of Jeremy Colliton and the rest of the coaching staff might be the best thing for Podkolzin to start this season, and it appears the Canucks felt the same way. You can read that piece by clicking here.

I will say, I like this managements no nonsense, not keep a guy around because he was a high draft pick, style of managing. Both Raty and Pods could have been kept on the big club because of where they were selected. Nope, go down to the farm and work your behind off.

That Abbotsford team is going to be great. So glad I bought seasons this year.

Yeah. That's looking to be a great team. Plus, coach Colliton has shown that he's excellent at developing players.

Podkolzin really looks like a Russian Virtanen sometimes. All the tools but shows up out of shape and not ready. If the kid would just skate hard and start hitting RT would play him all the time. If this doesn’t light a fire under him then it’s about time to label him a bustaroo.

Where did this fake news come from?? I’m not going to go back and look for it but by all accounts Podz was in serious shape with RT actually having to tell him to chill out a bit, not overtrain and spend time with his kid. I also recall a direct quote of Rick saying that he was looking in good shape or something of the sorts.

I really think this is about developing Pods and Hirose.  Pods didn't put up the numbers Hogs did in Abby last year and needs to.  Hirose needs some seasoning.  I think McWard does too honestly.  And Silovs needs more experience.  I have a hard time believing anyone else they sent to Abby is ever a full time NHLer.

Out of shape?!?

Podz was in excellent shape, Tocchet said so during the summer.

Podz stayed in town the whole summer and trained a lot.

I have already retracted this statement and been called out a few times. I misread something/confused him with someone else etc. he still has all the tools and doesn’t use them. Hopefully a long stint in Abby does him some good. Remind me to never make a mistake on this board as you will hear about it for days.

Burrows was 25 when he got his NHL break (half season).

Kessler was 21 when he played his first full NHL season.

Bieksa was 24 (half season).

Kessler was a late 1st rounder.  It takes some guys longer to develop their game sufficiently to handle the pace and skill level of the NHL.  Burrows and Kessler started their career as defensive specialists before earning more offensive roles.  It takes time to develop players so while I'm a little disappointed to see Podz not be ready yet, I'm suspecting he might be worth the wait.  We'll see.  In the mean time, Hogz is back on his game and that's a plus.

Oh. Dries is a lot lighter than deGesepi. He would be no loss. He’s not a guy that makes any difference to us winning.

I mean Dries got flippers up 3 times last season filled in Connor Murphy and Sean Durzi.

He got 14 goals in 2021/22.

People talk about him now like this didn't even happen. This BS about sending him down during the BB era and now this BS about him having to be the perfect player in order to stay in the NHL has destroyed him.

But this is exactly what I was afraid would happen when he was sent down and had to earn his roster spot all over again. He should have struggled through it in the NHL instead of the AHL.

Our AHL development needs some work. Who remembers the last time one of our AHL players really came in and made a difference? We need proper development so we can have the Burrows', Kesler's, and Bieska's of the world on our team again.

Seems like our young guys in the AHL just go there and lose value.

It all starts with proper drafting and we all know 'ol Uncle Jim B had a terrible time with drafting except fo a couple of obvious good picks that fell into his lap and even hanging onto draft picks resulting in what we see today with empty cupbaords on the farm team and why I was astonished to see JR throw away those two extremely high 1st & 2nd Rd. draft picks on Horn-Wreck and other draft picks thrown away as sweeteners in other deals - especially after he said he would not do that.  This all smells of "Aqua-Lini Tinkering & Impatience"!

When will the Canucks learn!
