Hockey Canada says new policy promotes inclusion and privacy for all players

It's early in the 2023-24 minor hockey season, and many players and their parents are getting adjusted to a new policy from Hockey Canada.

This season, all minor hockey players are required to wear the base layer they wear under their equipment to the arena. If they don't do that, they will have to change into their base layer inside a closed washroom stall at the rink.

The new policy is trying to promote inclusion and to respect the privacy of all participants on a team. It is now the responsibility of all coaches and team staff to instruct players regarding the minimum attire rule and make sure they are in compliance with it.

"All participants have the right to utilize the dressing room or appropriate and equivalent dressing environment based on their gender identity, religious beliefs, body image concerns, and/or other reasons related to their individual needs," Hockey Canada spokesperson Esther Madziya said in a statement emailed to CBC News.

Until it becomes part of a player's routine, there will likely be some confusion early in the season as both the young players and their parents get used to the new policy.

"It really doesn't take very long to jump into a washroom stall and do a quick change to get your base layer on underneath," said Craig Robinson, president of Halifax Hawks Minor Hockey. "Also these are pretty thin pieces of clothing and can quite often fit under a jacket or shirt anyway."

Robinson outlined the new policy in a letter sent to parents of Halifax Hawks players last week.

The new policy affects all minor hockey players from the youngest level right up to the under-18 age division.

"This isn't just about gender, it's about everyone being comfortable," said Robinson. "Coaches can't always visually identify and automatically know what gender someone identifies with, so this just allows everybody to fit into that dressing room."

Robinson admits there has been some pushback from parents to the Hockey Canada change. He says they have legitimate hygiene concerns when it comes to sweaty and smelly under gear being worn to and from the rink. But he says it is a small price to pay to make sure that hockey is inclusive for everybody.

Thoughts?

lol isn't a dressing room purpose is to let the player get dress there?? so now they have to go into a private stall or bathroom to get dressed? why are males and females in the same dressing room at the same time to begin with? and male usually go swimming without a shirt to begin with.. so are they going to force men to wear a shirt when they enter a swimming pool?

So this has not been a problem in 100 years, but in 2023 we will make a new rule in the name of progress that will be more cumbersome for 99.9% of people in order to protect the 0.1% with the added detail that it wasn't even the 0.1% who was asking for this.

Yup, that's Canada's (lack of) logic in 2023.

How soon before men have to wear t-shirts in swimming pools? 😆

We can blame Heil turdeau for this. He is doing his best to censor us like the book "1984" while he simultaneously destroys the medical, legal, and immigration systems. Wokism out of control for no real reason other than lefty nutters not being locked up.....argh.

Anyway, weird topic.

Do they mean socks and underwear? Not every kid/family can afford a full UnderArmour or equivalent type base layer. Not every player wants to wear such a base layer, for that matter.

My daughter played with boys up to bantam (or whatever they call it now), and she often had to dress in a separate room, come pre-dressed to some extent, or wait a few minutes to join the team in the room. One arena only offered a custodians closet for female players. So, I'm aware it can be irritating. Not sure this is the solution.

Hockey is already expensive af, requiring families to buy yet more gear for a relatively minor issue seems somewhat ignorant.

Nice try. This has nothing to do with your little rant. It’s about giving everyone playing “minor hockey” a chance to participate. Your other comments are craperolla.

Except if you show up without the base layer you're not allowed to play and repeat offenders can potentially be suspended...and how does this give everyone a chance? it hasn't been an issue at all

You know what gives everyone a chance to participate...lowering cost of fees and fuel.

It's a good idea.

And wow some of the comments in here are laughably bad. They sound like a bunch of pedo coaches pissed off they can't see the kids naked anymore or some shit.  like wtf.

Wait what? They aren't allowed to put on a base layer over underwear before the game...but they are allowed to shower after the game, what's the logic in that. Clearly there's something wrong with you and hope you can get help when you instantly jump to such an absurd claim.

I swear some people are just cocked up and ready to fire at any chance they have to roast JT, even if he has absolutely nothing to do with anything. You have the bumper sticker to match? Lol

You better go back and reread the article..lol

Yes, the people up in arms about the change to dress protocol sound like a bunch of pedo coaches pissed off they aren't allowed to see kids naked anymore or something.

Pretty fucked up.

So what’s next? A unisex change room for males and females so they can be “inclusive”

Stalls in a room open to everyone works too. They've started doing it with bathrooms which is a good thing.

But walls cost money. Which is too bad so sad for businesses and institutions that would have to provide them. Alligator tears.

The only people upset about this are those that:

a) think that everything is a culture war meant to take away their freedumbz… and likely don’t even have kids in hockey.

b) people who are upset that kids have to be wearing underwear when hanging out with them.

This is literally a rule about wearing underwear in locker rooms.  Lots of teams are mixed genders at lower levels and the girls already have to do this and don’t get to hang out with the team until everyone is dressed… missing out on most of that team bonding.

Now girls can be in there with their teammates, queer kids, shy kids, etc get to be a little more comfortable at the expense of having to get base layer on early (which most younger kids do anyways).

I am sure the rule will

get tweaked a little and arenas will

slightly change their infrastructure, etc.  No need to make a mountain out of a molehill because it suits you politically.

Exactly. Anyone up in arms about policies meant to protect kids, welcoming to all sexes and genders to the sport should be happy about this.

Who wouldn't be.

Absolutely nothing says they cannot strip down after the game and shower....so again how does it protect kids and genders? I wouldn't be letting my daughter change in the dressing room with the boys anyways, that's just messed up to think anyone would let their teenage daughters change in a room of guys.

Tell.me your brainwashed without saying you are lol

Seriously the issue at hand is mixed genders at the minor level as players and mixed genders for coaching and media

Simple solution is what they did .... that way all players can experience the same team events and meetings as can staff

I don't care for Trudeua either but this isn't a political issue..... other than those that seek to make everything political
