When did the NHL start allowing teams to draft children straight out of junior high school? You guys missed a big opportunity with that pick. It was hilarious when his father wore it and would be just as funny if his son did also.
Popular Post JamesB
Putting my two cents. First, I knew nothing about any the players drafted by the Canucks today (Saturday). But the picks illustrate some things about overall Canuck strategy that I think are interesting. 1. As noted in the story from the Province quoted by @Rip The Mesh, the Canuck draft as a whole (in all three years with JR and PA) matches up quite well with rankings that rely heavily on analytics. That is a big change from Benning. Of course, ten years ago analytics were not as well developed as they are now, especially for junior leagues. But now, using analytics has improved drafting. 2. While I want the Canucks to pick the BPA (best player available) or at the least the BSPA (best Swedish player available ), it is always good to see a local kid drafted, partly because those guys are always so happy to be drafted by the Canucks. So it was great to Alcos drafted. 3. I love the Romani pick. He fell because this is his second year of eligibility for the draft and he was passed over last year. But he is one of the youngest guys in his cohort. If he was two months younger (actually two months and 3 days) this would have been his first year. And with his numbers (111 pts, +43, leading the OHL in goals and second in pts) combined with strong underlying skills, he would have been a first round pick. He made a big step up from last year and that is also a positive indicator as you want guys who are improving rapidly. 4. As has been mentioned before, the Canucks are going for "high variance" players -- (guys with "high upside"). That is the right strategy for late round picks. 3 2

RetroCanuck
Good draft without high picks. high risk, high reward! None of them may make it but if one hits that’s all you need
WHL rocks
Montréal Canadiennes are going to be my 2nd favorite team soon. Love this kid Demidov they drafted. So talented. Going to be fun watching that young team grow into a good team.
Bure_Pavel
Minnesota Wild come out like bandits in this one imo based on the number of picks they had. Sharks and Canadiens did quite well for them selves as well. I like the Canucks picks but harder to get excited when your first pick is in the 3rd round. Didnt seem like this draft was as deep in the later rounds as last year.

Yeah Calgary did very well for themselves, for San Jose having the first overall pick its hard not to be a winner. They got very lucky Dickinson was there at 11 as well. I cant believe the Wild were able to pick up Aron Kiviharju in the fourth round. He then walks right up the Guerin and tells him he just picked the steal of the draft. https://hockeywilderness.com/news-rumors/minnesota-wild/watch-fourth-rounder-kiviharju-to-guerin-you-just-got-the-steal-of-the-draft-r30121/

I had Chernyshov ahead of Dickinson at 11, so that was maybe the steal of the draft for me. But then Sahlin Wallenius, Carson Wetsch, Colton Roberts. Looks like a real solid draft for them all the way through.

Maybe even Michkov and Demidov that would have been really fun!
