Easy, he could make documents in English for Ohtani to sign that said all kinds of stuff.

True.  Or, come to think of it, maybe he invented a story (about a charity or a business deal) that required Ohtani to send the wire transfers.

If Mizuhara did resort to such underhanded tactics, you have to think it's crushing for Ohtani.  From the sounds of things, the two were very close friends.

He and Ippei are very close friends.

If Ohtani actively helped Ippei settle his gambling debt, it's a completely understandable thing to help a friend in deep shit.  But one problem... it is also a federal crime to wire money to an illegal gambling ring.  This is a potential reason why Ippei's story doesn't match with Shohei's claim of theft - the team is covering his tracks.

Ah!  So Ohtani may have inadvertently broken the law while trying to help out a friend.  And when he and the friend realize this, the friend changes his story to protect Ohtani.

IF that turns out to be the case, how would MLB handle the situation?  Not to mention the federal authorities.

Should be fascinating to see how this all plays out.

No no, Ippei's story makes Ohtani potentially liable.  Ohtani's story is that Ippei just stole his money and did all of this by himself.

Right.  Or at least, Mizuhara's first story, on Tuesday, made Ohtani potentally liable.  The next day, after Ohtani's people claimed that Mizuhara had stolen the money, Mizuhara changed his story and said Ohtani had nothing to do with the gambling or the transfer.  Or so I read this except from the link I posted:

"ESPN said it spoke to Mizuhara on Tuesday night, at which point the interpreter said Ohtani had paid his gambling debts at Mizuhara’s request. After the statement from Ohtani’s attorneys saying the player was a victim of theft, ESPN says Mizuhara changed his story Wednesday and claimed Ohtani had no knowledge of the gambling debts and had not transferred any money to bookmakers."

https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/sports/shohei-ohtanis-interpreter-accused-of-stealing-millions-from-the-dodgers-player/3368500/#:~:text=Interpreter Ippei Mizuhara%2C 39%2C was,during their season-opening win.

So, it seems to me, Mizuhara may be taking responsibility for this entire affair either because he is actually responsible for this entire affair, or because he's acting as a friend by taking a bullet for Ohtani who did wire the money and/or because he's getting paid a whole lot of money to take a bullet for Ohtani.

You bet your ass they will. Ohtani is by far the biggest name / story in baseball right now and MLB will not mess with that.

Any sort of action taken against Ohtani right now would cause a bigger stir than when Clarence Campbell suspended Rocket Richard.

Escobar released;

"

Veteran infielder Eduardo Escobar has been granted his release from his minor-league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays and is now a free agent, the team announced Friday.

Escobar was a late scratch from Toronto’s lineup on Friday, signalling that the release was coming.

The Blue Jays signed Escobar to the minor-league deal on Feb. 16 with an invite to spring training.

A 35-year-old switch hitter, Escobar posted a .411 OPS in 41 at-bats this spring, hitting one home run and striking out 17 times.

He hit .226/.269/.344 in 2023, splitting time with the New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels.

Don't be afraid boys - the Jays are gonna win it all this year.  We got those pieces we needed to put us over the hump:

39-year old Justin Turner

40-year old Joey Votto

Yankees legend Isiah Kiner-Falefa

The Greek gods Eduardo Escobar and Dan Vogelbach - peak male standard!

And of course, we know our team fitness didn't look great last season, but this time it'll be different!  Trust me:

Springer will stay healthy

Vladdy will stay healthy/fit

Alek Manoah will stay fit

Dunno, some  veteran bats in the playoffs would be a nice calming influence.

If you're a real Jays fan, you'll know that the true challenge of any season (but especially this season) is to make out of the bloodbath that is the AL East.

Let's just say we're a team of perennial underachievers bringing on a bunch of dinosaurs in the hopes they'll come back to form.  We're hoping everyone on the roster comes back to form.  That's some strategy.

I'm sure you have.  No sarcasm.

You tell me that after looking at Tampa, New York, and Baltimore, that we are the ones who will win the division.

It all depends on the starting rotation. Jays will have to win a lot of 1 run games.

How is a guy earning $200k a year allowed to rack up a gambling debt of $4.5 million? That’s just laughable.

This has to be Ohtani’s gambling debt.

Doubt Commissioner Manfred has the guts to do anything apart from sweep this under the rug.

If Commissioner Landis were still around and it was warranted he’d be banned for life.
