I wonder if ownership has had enough and is preventing management from causing further long-term damage while they search for people qualified to work in a Front Office.

I hope so, but baseball people don’t get fired like they do in hockey. They’ll let them do a couple rebuild- compete-struggle cycles usually in baseball. It’s not as fickle as hockey.

So they might let them do another rebuild… in baseball it’s a common expectation to make the playoffs once every 5 years unless you’re the dodgers, yanks, Bosox or the texas teams.
That being said this year has been a colossal failure as Everyone thought they’d be competing for 2nd in their division and a lock for a wildcard spot, so we’ll see what happens.

That's truly terrifying given the track record of Atkins and Shapiro.  They've been in two cities and have shown absolutely no sign that they are fit to run anything more complicated than a lemonade stand under adult supervision.

And think about it… they were in Cleveland 20+ years and had 1 sting of 5 years of playoff baseball?

And during their first rebuild here they trade Donaldson.. 1 year removed from winning mvp for a pitcher from their old organization that was 27 and had yet to throw a pitch in the majors???

The feel-good story surrounding infielder Orelvis Martinez took a decided turn for the worse as the Blue Jays continue to go deeper into the abyss.

On the day the Blue Jays closed out their three-game series in Cleveland, news broke of Martinez, the club’s No. 2 prospect, had been suspended 80 games for violating Major League Baseball’s performance-enhancing drug policy.

With family in attendance at Progressive Field on Friday to see the 22-year-old infielder make his Jays debut, Martinez singled to lead off the sixth inning for his first major-league hit.

He’s now been hit with a suspension that will likely keep him from playing the rest of the season in the majors after he testing positive for Clomiphene, a fertility drug on the league’s banned substance list.

In a statement, Martinez said he had spent the past two years trying to start a family with his girlfriend and was prescribed Rejun 50, a Clomiphene tablet, over the winter after visiting a fertility clinic in his native Dominican Republic.

“We wanted to keep this matter private, even within our family, and trusted the doctor who assured us this treatment did not include performance-enhancing drugs,” Martinez said in the statement. “Therefore, I made the mistake of not disclosing this to my team or the MLBPA. With that said, I took full responsibility for my negligence and accepted my suspension.”

Martinez was called up from the triple-A Buffalo Bisons last Tuesday when Bo Bichette (calf) went on the injured list and was expected to be sent back when the Jays shortstop was activated in the next day or two.

Martinez, who started at second base on Friday, going 1-for-3 with a strikeout, became a symbol of hope on a Blue Jays team that has looked hopeless at the plate, sliding six games under .500 following Saturday’s loss.

“The Blue Jays fully support Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program, and strongly believe in keeping the game on a level playing field,” the club said in a statement.

“We were both surprised and disappointed to learn of Orelvis Martinez’s suspension. We will do everything in our power to ensure Orelvis has learned from this mistake.”

A native of Santo Domingo, Martinez batted .260 with 16 homers and 46 RBIs over 63 games with the Bisons this season.

Martinez broke the news Saturday to GM Ross Atkins and manager John Schneider.

It’s terrible news for Martinez, terrible timing for the Jays, who were looking to avoid being swept for a second series in a row on Sunday, having lost the first two games against the host Guardians.

Oof, demoralizing.  I have an idea, bring in new leadership at the top of the organization.🤔

I don't want any part of Shatkins overseeing a rebuild. If this losing streak reaches 10 or more which it very well could, get them out of here before the trade deadline.

If ownership won't, hopefully they at least prevent any trades until they hire qualified management in the off season.

Never seen a guy backpedal so far for a ball like Guerrero did…he didn’t catch the ball and then they ruled it a Triple..

Vladdy looked bad on that play, but IMO that's all on Springer. You have to call off the infielder when the ball is that deep....

Trade bait?-Just who might go -not what comes back 😞

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/mlb/five-players-the-blue-jays-might-trade-ahead-of-the-deadline/ar-BB1p0Yt4?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=ff312b35415c4389a53cfac5c79e5bb6&ei=53

"The trade deadline is just around the corner and the Toronto Blue Jays haven’t managed to dig themselves out of the hole, unfortunately. Almost halfway through the season, Toronto now possesses a 36-43 record and is six and a half games away from securing the last Wild Card spot. Overall, the 2024 season has been a disappointment for the Blue Jays so far, but this presents an opportunity for the team to take advantage of the trade market that will inevitably be filled with hungry buyers. "

----------

"

Yusei Kikuchi

Position: Starting pitcher

Throws: Left

Kikuchi signed a three-year, $36-million contract with the Blue Jays during the 2021 offseason. While the beginning of his tenure with the Blue Jays was rocky at best, Kikuchi succeeded in reaching his potential and has been performing mostly at his best since the 2023 season. With a 4.00 earned run average (ERA) and 1.7 WAR, Kikuchi can strengthen the contenders’ rotation as a backend starter.

Best fits: Atlanta Braves, Minnesota Twins, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, St. Louis Cardinals

Danny Jansen

Position: Catcher

Bats: Right

Despite his injuries, Jansen has been a bat-first catcher in Toronto for a few years. Jansen played 86 games in 2023 with the Blue Jays and hit 17 home runs with a 116 WRC+, showcasing his potential for more. Jansen also demonstrated his ability to build rapport with a wide range of pitchers throughout his time in Toronto. Catching has been thin around the league and a competent catcher like Jansen is certainly an asset to many contenders.

Best fits: Kansas City Royals, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners

Yimi García

Position: Relief pitcher

Throws: Right

García has been one of Toronto’s better-performing relief pitchers thus far this season. García has struggled at times but he possesses a 2.57 ERA and 34.6 strikeout percentage, which is considered excellent in many regards. While García may not be as elite as some of the relief pitchers in the majors, he has the potential to bring more firepower to contenders who hope to add more swing-and-miss factor to their bullpen.

Best fits: Atlanta Braves, Arizona Diamondbacks, Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants

Trevor Richards

Position: Relief pitcher

Throws: Right

Richards has been a versatile pitcher throughout his major league career and has played multiple roles as a member of the Blue Jays. He has experience as an opener, long man and set-up man with Toronto and has mostly excelled in most of these roles. Richards isn’t considered a candidate for a closing role, but his experience and skills can be appealing to many contenders, especially for those who are seeking seventh and eighth-inning help.

Best fits: Chicago Cubs, Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Sam Francisco Giants, St. Louis Cardinals

Kevin Kiermaier

Position: Centre fielder

Bats: Left

Kiermaier is currently on a one-year, $10.5-million contract with Toronto. It’s undeniable that Kiermaier’s value comes mostly from his defensive skills and sprint speed rather than his bat at this stage of his career. Even with his lacklustre batting stats, many contenders are always on the hunt for defensive stars who can effectively prevent runs. With a total of four Gold Glove awards, Kiermaier can become an asset for teams looking for late-inning defensive actions.

Best fits: Atlanta Braves, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres

Justin Turner

Position: Designated hitter

Bats: Right

Much like Kiermaier, Turner is also on a one-year deal with the Blue Jays this season. Turner hasn’t always been consistent in his batting with Toronto but has offered value through his patient plate approach and experience. Turner’s performance also has been improving since June. The harsh truth is that it will be harder to trade a player like Turner this time around. However, his veteran presence could become valuable to contenders looking to add versatility and a thump based on match-ups.

Best fits: Boston Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres

With the Toronto Blue Jays currently at a crossroads between buying and selling this summer, the fifth-place club is seven games under .500 and easily one of the biggest disappointments out of the gate this season.

As the season hits the halfway mark and after Ross Atkins’ earlier media availability earlier today, Sportsnet’s Hazel Mae spoke to Jays shortstop Bo Bichette before tonight’s game and asked him whether he would be surprised if the front office traded him at the deadline.

His response was blunt, “No. Not surprised at all.”

It doesn’t come as a shock that the Blue Jays infielder is feeling like he may be moved this summer, as the organization continues to creep closer to becoming a seller with postseason aspirations continuing to slip away. While the likes of Yusei Kikuchi, Yimi Garcia, Danny Jansen, Justin Turner, and Kevin Kiermaier are more likely to be moved at the deadline given their current contract statuses, the Jays could also net a haul of prospects if they were to move either Bichette or Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who are both under contract control through next season
