Story by Shi Davidi

TORONTO — Much like the off-season, the lead-up to the trade deadline and the strategic posturing inherent to it can make it difficult to separate fact from fiction. The Toronto Blue Jays are right in the middle of that vortex, so with four weeks before the July 30 cutoff, here’s a look at some of the conversations fans and people in the baseball industry are having about them:

The season is already over

Math doesn’t lie, and with playoff odds of 4.2 per cent, as calculated by FanGraphs, it’s pretty clear that barring an absurdly-off-the-charts turnaround, the Blue Jays won’t be playing October baseball.

Now, that’s a reality for the front office to acknowledge and manage through while mapping out a trade-deadline strategy, even if it’s one Blue Jays players steadfastly reject each time they take the field. No matter the odds, players are wired to believe they’re one hot streak away from turning things around, especially in a league filled with mid-teams chasing the second and third wild cards.

Playoff odds, after all, aren’t static, they fluctuate based on ever-changing inputs and can change quickly. At the same time, the mounting injuries facing the Blue Jays — Isiah Kiner-Falefa’s placement on the injured list with a left knee sprain likely to sideline him into August is the latest hit — only make the road that much tougher. There’s nothing wrong with playing things out while simultaneously working on parallel tracks, which is what the Blue Jays are doing, even though a partial sell is nearly inevitable.

Much more at link.

All the talk is around Vladdy and Bo, but the Jays have a lot of pitchers that contending teams would love to have....If you had to keep just one starter, I suppose it would be Berrios, but I'd make everyone else available.

I'd also listen on Bo. He's a talented hitter, but just an average SS.....and I've always gotten the impression that he be just fine with being moved.

during yesterdays Jay's game- heard either Buck or Dan mention that Romano is having surgery, and it will be almost Sept before he starts throwing a ball.

I.K.F. injured his left knee-while stretching and is 'week to week'- of note he leads the team with a 3.2 war rate.

Today's game is 10:07 pacific.

https://www.msn.com/en-ca/sports/mlb/blue-jays-release-tim-mayza-after-reliever-was-designated-for-assignment/ar-BB1puJyF?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531&cvid=f7df20bdc15b45c38c66f292301a1b21&ei=67

After being designated for assignment last week, Tim Mayza cleared waivers and was released by the Toronto Blue Jays Friday, according to the MLB transaction log.

The Blue Jays will be charged with paying his entire $3.59 million salary.

Mayza struggled to replicate his stellar form from last season for Toronto, which earned him high-leverage outings throughout the 2023 campaign. His ERA ballooned throughout his final five outings with the Blue Jays, rising to nearly 25 over a tough four-inning stretch for the 32-year-old.

For the season, the southpaw carried an 8.03 ERA over 24.2 innings.

“It comes down to performance,” manager John Schneider said after Mayza was designated for assignment. “It’s tough for Timmy. He’s been here for such a long time, been such a big part of our bullpen and our team.

“(It’s) been a rough year for him, so hopefully, a change of scenery is good for him, as much as we hate seeing him go.”

Originally selected by the Blue Jays in the 12th round of the 2013 draft, Mayza pitched with Toronto for parts of seven seasons, racking up 283.2 innings with a 3.87 ERA and 292 strikeouts.

Now a free agent, Mayza will look to catch on with another MLB franchise.
