The prospects they have actually look (eye test) pretty good for about 4 or 5 years from now. Sure, 7 years 5M retention seems huge but at least they could get a player back in a trade with retention. As a buyout, in a few years even, the penalty will last 14 years right now.... and a few of those years they get a full 10M cap hit but its before/during their young prospects are on the ice. Retention for 6 or 7 years less painful. Considering all the cheap youth they have coming up and the picks for the next few years. They should go the Tank route now. Full out tank.
