Passing improved, and we got way more shots on net. To a man, Canucks were giving their all digging out pucks, playing defence, even Kuzmenko, Boeser. Tocchet has these guys bought into the team game. Hughes was a one man breakout machine, and stopped multiple Blues breakouts at their blue line .... 1. Excellent summary by @Huggy Bear. Great game for Canuck fans (like me). Probably not much fun for "neutral observers" and certainly not for Blues fans. 2. There has been a fair amount of angst over the Canucks poor to mediocre underlying stats, despite the good start. Tonight's game moved the underlying stats a long way in the right direction. 3. I cannot recall seeing a period where one team was as dominant as the Canucks were in the first. They were only up 1 - 0 but the "all strengths" Corsi was 35 to 4 and the scoring chances were 19-1 (in Natural Stat Trick). Those are biggest one period differentials I can ever recall seeing. I was actually a bit worried that the Canucks might be getting frustrated with only a one-goal lead after such complete domination. Fortunately, the three quick goals early in the second put the game out of reach. 4. Hughes, Hronek, Miller, PDG, and Petey continue to be lights out. And Demmer was very good. Friedman continues to be a positive surprise and Cole/Friedman pair was good. Not sure how long they can keep up this quality of play, but the Friedman pickup looks great. 6. For people who like to worry (like me) it is still a bit of a concern that the bottom 6 is having a hard time getting on the scoresheet. Suter looks like he is squeezing the stick too hard. He had a couple of great opportunities and several decent opportunities where he could not make anything happen. He also looked too slow. The other bottom 6 guys also had chances. Hope the puck starts going in for them soon. Hogs was very good tonight. No way he can come out of the lineup. 7. As others have noted, Myers was quite good tonight -- the best he has been this season. Still not in the same league as Hughes and Hronek, but good. It helped to get St. Louis in the second game of back to backs, although the Canucks were so dominant that I don't that that was a big factor. Still, the team will be a bit tired tomorrow and the Rangers are a better team. That game will be a test. 5 3 3

That defense still needs an elite RHD, who can break up plays and transition the puck with ease. Myers has to be the odd man out Not likely that we'll get an elite RHD. Hronek is good, I don't consider him elite. If we want an elite RHD, it's probably coming through the draft.
Ghostsof1915
I know there was a lot of complaining about the awkward way they let Bruce go. And he deserved better, but I get it that management wanted a new coach. And they wanted the new coach to check out the team prior to the end of the year to figure out where the issues was. I would have preferred to let Bruce coach out the string and get a better draft pick. But early in the season, I think Toc getting time with the players at the end of last year. Is paying dividends right now. So real conspiracy question. Was the struggles in pre-season just due to young, not ready players? Or a ruse to throw off the opposition to get them to underestimate the Canucks? Either way. 5-2 looks good on Vancouver.

I wouldn't be surprised if we lost tomorrow, but if we can get a point from tomorrow's game against the Rangers, that would be huge.

Bennings core is still intact-- They did all the heavy lifting, afterall. Petey, Miller, Hughes, Boeser, Demko, Hog, Podz... Myers and Garland gone soon enough. (And Horvat was from the Gillis regime turned into Hronek) but this is still very much Bennings core. And if they succeed, it will still have his name all over it. Just like Nonis and Burkie with that 2011 team we all love. Edited October 28, 2023 by Canuckle

Gar and Suter both had great A's tonight and missed the net. Suter and Joshua have done a really good job winning puck battles, especially the last few games. They need someone who can score goals on there line though. Why I’m interested in offering Kessel a contract just for the year once Garland is traded.
