For sure equipment cost plays a role in getting the kids into the sport. However I have seen kids get more excited for NBA games and know the names of most the players. I think the NBA just markets the game more effectively than NHL.

I think Hronek was a ppg player, or close to it, before he was traded.
He was their best player.

but Detoilet stuck him with Maatta for 1/2 the time and made him carry the hardest match ups. And expected him to be physical too.

We're letting him shine in the top pair here.

Yzergod figured he was expendable.

Drance is kinda the modern day Tony Gallagher.  They both have/had high expectations of the team and give praise very sparingly, so when they do give it, you know it's earned.  It's like they demand perfection in a sport where perfection is near impossible but if you view them with that lens it takes the sting out of their criticisms (because of course they're going to find something to criticize because it's hard to be perfect in hockey).

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I value Drance's perspective.  Doesn't mean I always agree with it (like at all).  But I find, if you take their criticisms with a grain of salt, there's an interesting perspective there.  Just be prepared to bring a lot of salt 😆

I'm with you on this.  I appear to be in the very small (and very non-vocal) minority who thinks that Drance has been a fantastic addition to the sports media landscape in Vancouver.  I think he is extremely entertaining to listen to, very well prepared, knowledgeable, well-spoken, etc.

Sure, he can be tough to please, and perhaps sometimes a contrarian just for the sake of being a contrarian, but I love listening to him.  Drance's show each afternoon with Jamie Dodd is the best part of the day on Sportsnet 650 (up there with Halford and Brough).

Yea AI writes it for him and his prompt goes like this:

“hello ChatGPT you are my Canucks hockey expert analyst, please write me a 2000 word article that is negative about the Vancouver Canucks, there should be nothing positive, only doom and gloom and include my stupid on the radio laugh please at the end of my article.” Yours Truly Drancer

Are you talking about Drance? He steals all of his ideas from here I'm quite sure. Low fruit picker specialist. 😴

No we didn't. We did not overpay for Hronek. A top paring cost controlled Dman is worth at least what we paid.

Exactly this. Great post. That "overpaid for Hronek" narrative doesn't hold up. That's what needed to be paid for a Dman of his caliber. A lot of people were wrong about Hronek.

Drance’s burner account confirmed.

Gotta wonder if Edmonton's going to make the playoffs this year. They're so far behind right now. The game tomorrow is going to be huge, if we can take another 2 points from them, that's gotta bury them from even catching us with the way they're playing no? Also have to wonder if the head coach is going to be fired this early in the season.

Huge statement game tomorrow. I think if Canucks can win against the Oilers, Sens, and Leafs this week then maybe all 3 coaches get fired. We'd be the Coach Killers, lol

Keep in mind Drance disagreed heavily on the Athletics ranking of Quinn Hughes. So he's taking one for the Canucks questioning the rankings from the publication he works for.

The thing about Drance is that he doesn't evaluate teams based on the eye tests (so to speak). He uses a similar methodology Odd Makers use to evaluate a team. This is also the reason why he's not ready to commit what kind of the team the Canucks are because the analytics shows they either played really well or quite poorly (despite winning some of these games).

The thing also is that Drance has been consistent in his view on how to build a team. He believes in the idea that you need to give your franchise the runway to have a chance to win the Cup which also means he doesn't like the idea of the fast track moves the Canucks have made in recent years since these moves tend to shorten your runway.

Some planes can take off more quickly than you’d expect on a short runway. Perhaps Rutherford has managed to build that kind of plane. Err… team.

Quite nuts to see the Canucks right now have the league leader in scoring, league leader in defenceman scoring, league leader in +/- and league leader in goalie wins and shutouts.

Our stars really are the best in the league right now at the 10 game mark which is quite unreal when you consider they're looking better than Makar and McDavid.

Yzerman is overrated as a manager.

Julien Brisebois is probably equally or more of the reason for Tampas success. He was gifted the gm position for team Canada because of his stature as a player.

I'm pretty sure anyone can manage team Canada with that talent pool. Especially back when he was doing it, might be a bit harder now with no goaltending.

JR and PA fleeced the Redwings and the Islanders. That Horvat contract is not going to age well. It already hasn't.

I think the United States is going to overtake Canada  for hockey supremacy honestly. They have the largest population, and the most teams in the league where they can inspire kids to take up hockey. I mean, even Arizona has developed one of the greatest goal scorers in the NHL in Austin Matthews, and he's from the desert state, even if the hockey team there has sucked for a long time.

Tage Thompson is a great player born in Phoenix Arizona.

Both Mathew and Brady Tkachuk are born there as well but they had hockey genes because of their dad. And he played in Phoenix when the boys were born.

I agree US will be #1 in hockey just because of the population of the country and hockey becoming more popular in the US.

And Hronek is (tied for) second in D scoring. And he doesn’t play PP 1 minutes. All other D on the scoring top charts are big minute PP guys.

Kinda hilarious that this gets brought up, considering last season when things went pretty terrible. Why do people need to keep bringing up skeletons in the past?

Ya I notice that quite regularly.

Kids are more into NBA than NHL now days.

Actually I've been noticing it for several years but even more so lately.

My sons live in Edmonton and they're more into hockey but the kids here in the lower mainland are more into NBA.

I'm mentoring a 22 year old young man, him and his friends don't watch hockey at all. Only NBA.

My nephews follow UFC NBA and NFL. I watched last night's game with them but they don't watch it much.

They played hockey when they were young. Got into MMA and wrestling pretty young.  National level wrestlers. One came in 2nd at nationals as a 17 year old.

But not really into the NHL even though they played ice hockey when younger.
