[Speculation] Leafs were after Dumba in Free Agency but had to settle with Klingberg

So, Klingberg is a horrendously bad decision, and I think EVERYONE on this board knew it at the time... 4.15 million for him is a joke, he should be around 2.5 million considering his defensive liabilities.

Reaves? 10 years ago, great deal. Now? 1.35 million for 3 years is laughable, and it's an anchor for them. Because it's a multi-year, 35+ contract, I don't believe that they are allowed to bury the cap hit in the AHL, even if they waive him and demote him. I believe that they will still have the full cap hit on the main team books, even if he can't play anymore.

They can still buy it out apparently...

While this is a 35+ contract, it is exempt from the 35+ buyout rules because it is either 1). One year in length, or 2). Not front-loaded and does not have a signing bonus after the first contract year (as per the 2020 MOU).

They can't even get rid of Reaves cap hit by sending him to the AHL. Because it's a multi-year 35+, it stays with the main team.

I believe his contract doesn't meet those qualifications.  He can also be bought out...

Still not a great option for someone they JUST signed for 3 years, considering what cap space is like right now.

Meh, they've started benching him.  Toronto has already been outscored 7-0 with him on the ice (might be an old stat).

But do you know who they're still not benching?  This guy:

True.  They could try and trade him as well.  I think he’s played for almost every team in the league. Reaves gets around more than the hooker on a Friday night…

Steve Dangle has already discussed what a buyout would look like - about 450K cap hit for a bunch of years.  The whole panel was in agreement that they should do it.

I don't get how Toronto saw what happened with Calgary and decided that Trevliving was a good idea.

To be fair, Trevelling looked like a good GM up until the beginning of last season. It just looks bad now because of the events that have transpired after the Tkachuk trade; however, even the Tkachuk trade looked genius at the time given the circumstances.

Prior to the Canucks game, two of David Ambers guests said an Alberta team is going to make the playoffs. Doubt Quinn Hughes will get 100 points. I hope they keep that tape.

poops wrong thread, please move to Around the NHL.
