I'd love to know what's really been said behind closed doors. I can see McDavid going straight to Holland's office and demanding he make improvements, or else! Probably throwing his goalies and D under the bus in the process.

The goaltending isn't even the biggest issue with them, the top players can't defend at all. Look at this play, McCryDrai are both just standing around.

Maybe Katz should pull a Harold Ballard and can Holland and Newguy and bring a surprise coach back.

Pretty hard to blame his lack of scoring on goaltending though. If he was producing like last year and they were losing games 7-6 that would be different, but he isn't in a position to be preaching and passing the blame.

Could this spell the beginning of the end for McDavid in Edmonton?

It's just a rough mix of things.

 

1) I think McDavid is injured.  There are clips of him wincing and favouring his chest/collarbone.  The Oilers are already in desperation mode and it wouldn't be surprising to hear that multiple players are trying to fight through injuries to help the team.

 

2) Everyone has taken a step back.  Skinner is having a massive sophomore slump.  His numbers are way down from last year.  But the defending in general is also way down.  Bouchard can't defend.  Draisaitl can't defend.  Nurse can't defend either.  Regression across the board, including that vaunted powerplay of theirs.

 

3) The first period woes.  We saw it in our games against them.  They look like hot garbage coming out the gates.  4-0 after 20 minutes.  Even a bad team shouldn't be giving up 4 goals in the 1st as often as EDM does.

 

4) Everyone is now playing on edge in the worst way.  These guys are gripping their sticks like Darth Vader - with crushing force.  There are times when the Oilers are just pouring it on offensively and look good doing it, but they can't score because the pucks just aren't going in.  They are generating a lot of high-danger scoring chances but my guess is the problem is mental.  It's like game 7 overtime but on a permanent basis.  That's too much adrenaline.

1) I think McDavid is trying to find his own pulse. The guy has no heart, that shit aint beating at all. Never been much of a back checker, just gives lip service to the camera when shit doesnt go his way. No extra effort.

All your points are just that they suck and aren't trying.  McDavid has no heart... they are just lazy whiners, they're not trying, they don't backcheck...

 

There's way more to it than that.  There is little explanation for why everything that worked in the past is suddenly failing catastrophically now.  They have won THREE playoffs series in the past two seasons.  By all accounts they are the same team as they were last year, but performing infinitely worse.  If they were the same (even as you suggested) then it doesn't explain what's happened here.  Why has their powerplay plummeted?  They have gone from 32.4% conversion last year to 21.9% this year.  That has nothing to do with anything you've mentioned.

Im calling out their leadership. There is zero accountability and zero display of how to play the right way. They put no fucking effort in on the defensive side

 

they got by on powerplays largely and poor goaltending from Markstrom. The moment the powerplays disappeared, so did the oilers hopes. Its no secret that McDavid had nearly half his points come on the PP last year (71) without the PP the struggle big time

Again.  Nothing you're saying explains the major drop-off this year.  The Oilers were actually better at powerplays in the 2023 postseason, where they skyrocketed to 46.2%.

 

I also don't want to hear crap about McDavid being a power play specialist.  The current Canuck stars are power play specialists.  Nearly half of the points from all our big guys (Hughes, Pettersson, Miller, Boeser) have come from the powerplay.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a strong powerplay so I'm simply trying to understand why the Oilers powerplay has suddenly fallen back down to earth.  You have not given a single substantive explanation as to why.
