Popular Post Curmudgeon Posted December 3, 2023 Popular Post Share Posted December 3, 2023 (edited) It was a very uneven game in Abbotsford Saturday night. The Canucks started out great in the first ten minutes but the game was tied at three after the first. They did not play well in the second period, but found their legs in the third. The game winner by Neilsen was highlight reel worthy. A few observations: - Arshdeep Bains is very, very good. His hockey sense is excellent and he's always a threat with the puck. Most of all, I think he skates well enough for the NHL. He might be one of those guys who excels with better players. I hope he gets a shot in Vancouver. - Podkolzin showed flashes of a power game and seems more mature as a player. He is very big and very fast and looks like he's begun to put it all together. - It was interesting to see McWard and Hirose as a defensive pair. They worked pretty well together late in the game and moved the puck well. Both are remarkably calm for rookie pros. - I know he's not on the radar for Vancouver, but Tristen Nielsen never disappoints. Tireless worker with pretty good offensive instincts. Same can be said for Chase Wouters. - Raty was invisible. I can't recall him making a play with the puck. - Wolanin is steady and smooth and his offensive instincts are top notch. - Tolopilo looked off tonight, but I don't think he gets a lot of work so maybe it's just rust. - Jett Woo continues to provide an assertive physical presence. Here in the conservative stronghold that is Abbotsford and area, having the same surname as the deeply detested Prime Minister deserves deafening boos every time he touches the puck. We hate him because of his name, was a comment I overheard. Pick an adjective of your choice to describe such behaviour: childish, petulant, misdirected, idiotic, stupid, inane, dumb, embarrassing. These are the same dolts who, blurt out FREE every time the word occurs in our national anthem. Why not leave your political views at home? Too long between games. On a side note, I hope that Calgary calls up more of their young guys and depletes their AHL club.
