da.moose
Recently, the Washington Capitals made some sizeable moves at the trade deadline in an attempt to win their first ever CDCGML Cup. The team moved on from some veterans at various positions, in order to retool their roster to compete in the ultra-competitive Eastern Conference. Roster players including Pierre Engvall, Erik Cernak, Mike Hoffman, and Marc Staal were moved via trade, while Tyler Johnson was acquired by the LA Kings via waivers as the day concluded. "We would like to thank the many departed players for their time and contributions to the Washington Capitals. One player in particular, Pierre Engvall has spent his entire career developing and playing various roles for our team. We are really extremely proud of him for his continued devotion and focus to improvement, and hope that the best years for him are yet to come now that he will be playing in Seattle. Same goes for Mike Hoffman, who came in in attempt to rejuvenate his career in Washington on a one year deal. We hope that playing in Seattle gives him an opportunity to play a larger offensive role, and hopefully re-find his groove as a scorer at the NHL level." "As per the defensemen that we moved, we felt that we reshaped our group and added some players that gave us the size and toughness we needed as well as a little extra offensive production. Staal and Cernak are both extremely reliable defensive defenders, but we felt that at this time, the players coming in will make us a little more potent offensively moving forward. We wish both men the best in Columbus." Other players that were shipped out include Rafael Harvey-Pinard, Mason Shaw, and Isaak Phillips who are all young players that have spent time on the NHL club as well as prospects including Kristian Vesalainen, Aatu Jamsen, Brandon Bussi, and Mikhail Abramov." "Moving out talented young players with bright futures in this league is never an easy decision. However, their new organizations might have opportunities available to them in the near term that could potentially make them mainstays in the NHL. We wish them the best moving forward and are proud of them for their contributions to our organization." Lastly, veterans Justin Holl and Darcy Kuemper, both of which have underperformed this season have cleared waivers and were assigned to the Capitals AHL affiliate Dover Dobermans. "Johnson getting claimed by LA, like Hoffman gives him a great opportunity to become a key contributor at the NHL level. Unfortunately, with the moves we made, we couldn't keep him on our roster despite making a lot of positive contributions to our team. As per Darcy and Justin, both players have reported to Dover where they will play key roles and keep playing competitive hockey. We made it clear that we might need them come playoff time and that it is critical that they use this opportunity to play extended minutes and find some of the confidence that they have been lacking for some of this season as their roles diminished." In terms of additions, the Caps made a major overhaul to their defence adding Brady Skjei, Jake McCabe, Joel Edmundson, and Vincent Desharnais. "We weren't expecting to bring in all these players, but by the time the day ended, we felt that we really solidified what we thought was a weakness of ours over the past couple seasons. When we acquired Desharnais, and Edmundson we felt really good about our depth. Both guys bring a lot of size and physicality which all teams need come playoff time. The moves also gave us confidence to move on from a couple other stay at home defenders and add McCabe and of course Brady Skjei who we think makes our defensive group a lot more threatening offensively without sacrificing too much in terms of defence. Skjei gives us an extremely talented big-minute d-man who we highly coveted. Same thing goes for McCabe who has proven to bring leadership and a solid all around game. We're really excited about how all four men will fit in in with our group" Additionally, the Caps added some depth up front in Kyle Okposo, Brandon Duhaime and Kevin Stenlund while also adding Jonathan Quick to backup Vasilevskiy and added 24-year old Jack St. Ivany who will join the AHL club. "When we heard that Logan O'Connor would be missing the rest of the season, we realized we were losing a major depth piece that we relied on for speed, grit, energy and intangibles in the bottom six. By adding Okposo, Duhaime, and Stenlund we feel we got a lot more physical at the bottom of oour forward group and hopefully that serves us well. The East is a grind and it's looking like we are going to be facing Mike Vanderhoek's Devils again in the first round' a team we haven't had playoff success against since 2012. We are fully aware that his team is loaded with talent throughout the lineup at every position, but we hope that we have done enough to compete against his roster and hopefully made a run for a Championship this season. Quick is having a great season and bringing him in as a backup gives us a whole lot of confidence in our goaltending, and we are also excited about bringing in Jack St. Ivany, a rangy, young right-handed defender to compete for minutes in what we believe is one of the most talented defence groups that we have ever rostered at the AHL level." "Lastly, we would like to thank all the agents, managers, and executives who continue to devote the time and energy necessary to make this league the best fantasy hockey league in the world."
